We did an about-take when we spotted this tiny church-like structure approx. 4km from Ballyvaughan on the R477 Wild Atlantic Way drive. We discovered that it was a small freshwater spring flowing into a rock basin. It had been covered with a Gothic Revival style structure with corbelled rubble-stone roof, stone gable copings and corner pinnacles, faux corner buttresses and an arched doorway. The structure was built in 1860. There is a small sigh on the interior grotto wall that reads; "Clare Council, Drinking Water, Please Keep Clean". The site is also regarded as a Holy Well judging by the few religious tokens in a wall recess.
