Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A couple of kilometers outside Cahir Town, the Swiss Cottsge, run by the OPW, is a gem of a place.
Admission was free both to the site itself and on the short tour which took about 15 minutes . Its a beautiful cottage ornè designed by the same man who designed Buckingham Place.
It's built to blend in with nature and all the wood in the exterior is local. Each window is different, each room is different to reflect that nature doesn't do order and straight lines! Nothing Swiss at all about it by the way, it's just a nickname the locals gave ut ehich then stuck. It was the Sumner House of the illustrious Butler family. It was not lived in, nor did they sleep here overnight, it was purely for entertaining rhemselves and their their friends on nice summers days.
There are two rooms downstairs, a music room and a drawing room. Each is furnished with ornate period pieces and the original walnut floor largejy survives.
Upstairs are 2 bedrooms, again beautifully furnished gorgeous balconies. They were only used to redt in or lie down, the Butlers never spent a night here.
It was an absolutely beautiful place to visit.

A friend of mine told me about this so we stopped. So glad we did. It was very interesting and the woman that did the tour was excellent. I didn’t see it on any of the many itineraries I looked at in researching our trip.
You can only visit by tour. We arrived on our own but we joined a scheduled tour about 15 minutes later so it worked out well. You can walk around the outside of the building while you wait and they also give you an information page to read.
Highly recommended.

We walked from beside the castle alongside the river and it was a delightful walk, very enjoyable. You can visit the exterior of the Swiss Cottage for free and it is gorgeous to look at. We paid for a guided tour which was full of information and really added to the experience. The house is full of interesting detail and we hadn't visited anywhere quite like it before. Very enjoyable.

We took a little trip to Tipperary for four days filled with activities.I had been to the Swiss Cottage back in 2009 and it was so enchanting I had to come back with my children to bring them to see it. Karen was a lovely tour guide. Friendly and even kept the attention of the children with her presentation of the history. It's as beautiful as I remember. I recommend walking from Cahir Castle down to the Cottage if you can it's a beautiful walk. Well worth the visit

This is a wonderful place to walk to from the castle (circa 30 mins along a paved path by the river). The house is gorgeous and is a lovely spot to picnic at. There are also toilets and you can also join a guided tour of the inside.

This little place is fascinating! We stopped by on our way through Tipperary and I'm so glad we did. The cottage is stunning and the guided tour was fantastic! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly and clearly loves the place herself. The tour takes about 15-20 minutes and is definitely worth hearing about the history. There are walks to do round about as well so it would be easy to spend a good number of hours in the area.

Even though the website said the cottage is closed we expected to get better directions. The sign said closed access only via riverside path there were no arrows or how far it was .
We walked for a while along the river but saw no indication of a road/path or anymore signage. Not great for a tourist attraction

Quite a walk from car park to house but other options are available. we visited on a heavy shower day, usual for Ireland ,but it didn't spoil our enjoyment. Guides were helpful and informative a beautiful house, you can walk along paths from the castle but thats a few miles! No cafe but adequate parking across the river available.

Stunning. This cottage is beautifully restored and decorated, from its wooden floors to its period furniture. The guided tour was very informative. The cottage is surprisingly bright and airy inside. Must have been amazing to live there. Be aware there are quite a few steps down to the cottage, from main car park. For those with mobility problems, there is another car park nearer the cottage.

Unfortunately for us we didn't book tickets ahead of time for an inside tour. But did enjoy walking around the outside of the cottage, really adorable!!! Almost like Lilliput houses, if you know what they are. Took a few pictures then decided to walk the pathway to Cahir Castle, a bit of a walk but nice along the water.

Hi Matt - seeing as the cottage closes in early November, I assume you were still able to walk up to the outside of the cottage in December? We are headed that way in mid November and we are hoping to just get up close to take some pics

I wouldn't say so - there is a tunnel to even get to the cottage and it's pretty locked up tight (the site that is).
