- Sarah H15 contributionsThe Real Irish Pub ExperienceCan not believe what an amazing time we had. If you are looking for an authentic Irish pub experience, and longing to feel all the charm the Irish locals have then this is your place. The bartenders Paul, and Brendan "Dougie" (sorry if I spelled any of that wrong) where amazingly welcoming and the stories that the whole bar's patron's joined in on and embellished kept all the infectious laughter going. I have to say that the people we met in this bar had the most welcoming and inclusive manner. I felt instantly at home and encouraged to join in the conversations. One of the bartenders in fact told us that they intentionally kept the bar TV and Wifi free to encourage camaraderie and real human connections. Later in the evening there was a band playing an acoustic set of Irish Country music, that was really a treat. We want to go back. Our trip from Texas to Ireland was long, the journey arduous and expensive for us, but Sean's made the whole thing worth it. We had only allotted a short time to Athlone, and now we want to return just to stay there and spend a few more nights laughing around the peat moss hearth fire.Visited March 2020Written 15 March 2020
- Gary BVancouver, Canada484 contributionsOldest pub in the world and the whisky is also goodWe visited the pub in May 2019; sorry for delayed review. The town of Athlone is worth a quick walk-about for the walls, church and old buildings. Sean's is supposed to be the oldest pub in the world or at least in Ireland dating back to 900 AD according to the Guinness book of records. It was originally known as Luan's Inn. It is small, dark, low ceitlinged and cozy, and could easily become crowded. We visited as part of a small tour group (8 people) and enjoyed a bit of history provided by I think the owner, which was interesting plus one free drink (Irish coffee). Bought a T-shirt (if you do, get the next size up from your regular size) and a separate shot of Sean's Whisky which is distilled by the pub. If you believe the story, the first whisky ever was distilled in a nearby monastery, and the distiller uses a recipe as close as possible to the original monk's recipe. This whisky is surprisingly mellow and easy to drink. If they sold it on the west coast of Canada, I'd would definitely purchase. Sean's is definitely worth a quick visit for the stories and a drink.Visited October 2020Written 12 September 2021
- rob60607Chicago, Illinois48 contributionsHistoric, definitely not touristySean's Bar dates back to AD 900 and bills itself as "Ireland's Oldest Pub." Before arriving, our fears were that this would be a tacky tourist trap. Those fears were completely unfounded. Inside is a small, cozy tavern with friendly bartenders and century's worth of charm: dim lights, low ceilings, small tables. I'm sure there are dozens (hundreds?) of similar pubs in similar towns in Ireland, but there's only one that's the oldest :) The town of Athlone is colorful and cute, with the River Shannon splitting it down the center. So glad we made the trek out there.Visited November 2019Written 3 January 2020

I’ve been visiting Sean’s since the late 60s before it was famous. I’ve always had fun there either playing music or listening and having a pint or two. Highly recommend visiting Sean’s.

This place was recommended to us by the car rental agency. And it did not disappoint. Parking was challenging to us, as we are not used to the tiny Irish roads. We had a great conversation with the owner, who told us the story of Sean's seat at the bar. We even found a Fire Department patch from a town near home, Schuykill Haven Fire Dept. It truly is a small world

Fun daytrip from Galway. Just an hour by train. Very small pub but wasn't crowded when we were there. Had a beer at the bar. Staff was friendly and helpful. Athlone is an interesting city. Others thing to see. The castle was cool.

If you are in the neighbourhood you must visit this bar, it is in Guinness Book of Records and proudly holds the record for the Oldest Pub in Ireland, however no pub in the world has been found to be older! It full of a huge mix of customers, old, young, tourists and locals, only the front part is original, they put sawdust on the floor which is what all bars and inns once put on the floor to soak up spills. The bar at the back has additional areas built on to make it a fun night out, it has an outdoor back patio with amazing views of the river Shannon, staff working hard and really polite making guests feel welcome.

Sean's Bar is a wonderful little pub to go for a drink or just sit and rest for a while. It is the oldest pub in Ireland. I was lucky enough to be there when a local group of musicians were playing. Everyone was very friendly and made you feel at home.

Sean's bar is a quaint little bar with a lot of personality. The bar staff were very friendly, Told me of the history of the bar, and were quick with service. Many little bars in Ireland have a tiny bathroom that is as old as the foundation...not Sean's! The bathroom was surprisingly big, updated, and very clean! For a small pub as a stop for tourists, it was a great little place that I would highly recommend! They do NOT do food, but there are several little cafes around the area. They also sell t-shirts and hoodies.

This place should be on everyone's Ireland bucket list. Timmy is a fun and helpful host and the atmosphere and history are incredible. Their house whiskey is great and brought some home to the US. I highly recommend stopping by for a pint or a shot.

I would contact the Athlone tourist info centre, which is located near the castle. It seems to me the town wants to encourage tourism, so I expect they would be helpful to your inquiry.

Athlone is a small enough town so Sean’s bar is within easy walking distance to all the hotels there. I particularly like the Sheraton Hotel.

We are spending the day in Galway. Would it be possible to travel to the pub by train for say dinner, and then catch a train to Dublin later that evening?

Not sure about the trains, but Sean’s doesn’t serve meals. We had hoped to have lunch there, but had to settle for a packet of crisps. Had an amazing cider, though - Orchard Thieves blood orange. Best ever!

Hi. There is a gang of us heading to Athlone Nov 5th for my 40th. Just wondering do ye reserve an area and do finger food
Cathy M
Athlone, Ireland2 contributions
Hi Grainne,
Thanks for your enquiry. On a Saturday night we do not hold reserve areas due to the size of the pub and the crowds that visit the pub on a Saturday night. We can hold a space up to around 6/7pm if that suited but we couldnt guarantee spaces after 7pm . If you have any further questions you can call us on 0906492358
Kind Regards
Declan
