    Oldest pub in Ireland
This place was recommended to us by the car rental agency. And it did not disappoint. Parking was challenging to us, as we are not used to the tiny Irish roads. We had a great conversation with the owner, who told us the story of Sean's seat at the bar. We even found a Fire Department patch from a town near home, Schuykill Haven Fire Dept. It truly is a small world

    Still great after 1123 years.
I’ve been visiting Sean’s since the late 60s before it was famous. I’ve always had fun there either playing music or listening and having a pint or two. Highly recommend visiting Sean’s.

    I'm glad I went
Since we were in Athlone, and staying right around the corner, we couldn't miss this place. I'm usually not one for bars, but Sean's is more like the rec room of a really cool friend, who had a grandpa with cool friends from all over the world who helped him decorate the place. And who has friends who stop by to play trad and do the DJ spin. And who built a beer garden in the back...... Trains between Dublin and Galway stop in Athlone!

    Old pub experience
Gorgeous very old pub on a very historical street, 200m from athlone castle. It dates back to 900 AD This pub is so quaint and divine. No TV screens no food & no signs for WiFi this was so refreshing. It's exactly what you need in an old pub. The walls are adorned with old photographs & memorabilia. It's a feast for your eyes. There is Tons of little snugs in this pub. There's sawdust on the floor The pub has a huge section out the back & lovely modern toilets They sell t shirts for 20e and they are very good quality. Of course we bought a t-shirt! Had a great pint of Guinness there 👍 I'd love to visit On a cold evening when the fire is lit & there's a few tunes playing Shur we will have to re visit again soon

    Oldest bar worth a trip.
Timmy shared stories about the bar's history and many funny tales while we all enjoyed a pint of guiness. Locals passed through each friendlier than the last. We had a large group and I think everyone of us bought merchandise. Very worth a trip to Sean's Bar. Ask for Timmy.

Oldest Bar In Ireland...Perhaps In Europe!
My wife and I planned our first day in Ireland around coming to Sean's Bar for its historic value. We were told to come early to get a good seat to see the band. We had the best seats in the house. This bar is full of such much history. I wish I could listen to the walls. We did get to listen to some great music and see some fun dancing. The walls are adorned with patches from law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and more. There are also license plates from across the globe. What a fun place. If visiting Ireland, plan a night in Athlone!

It was like stepping back in time to a forgotten age. the bar was full of locals and visiting tourists alike in the most convivial of settings, add to this some lovely traditional background music, lots of people laughing and a buzzing atmosphere, it was impossible not to stay longer then planned and more impossible not to be swept along in the joviality of the place. I have to say that the bar staff were certainly playing their part in helping the atmosphere to bubble along, they were an excellent advert for the pub. I cant wait to return one day in the not too distant future.

Great spot for a pint in Ireland's oldest pub
Sean's Bar has a lively, friendly vibe in a rustic environment that's full of charm. Sean himself poured our pints and we got a cozy booth table to enjoy them. There's lots to look at on the walls for anyone interested in history, and some cool merch to bring home (even if your name isn't Sean).

Absolutely a highlight of our trip!
We've had this on our bucket list for ages and finally made it from Canada. It was just as expected. A loud, noisy fun bar, with a lovely wood fire aroma in the air, sawdust on the floor, and drinks flowing. Impossible not to have a good time here.

    Three Cheers for Sean's Bar
Having Irish coffee or Irish whiskey in the oldest pub in Ireland was a very memorable experience. Our large group of 44 travelers from the state of Georgia were treated to a wonderful history of the pub by the manager. We also learned that Netflix is creating a documentary about Irish pubs that will include Sean's Bar. Be sure to include a visit to this historic place if you are in Ireland.

Final stop on our Ireland road trip and it did not disappoint. Advice. Go midweek and the earlier the better. The original ‘main’ pub is small so if you want to enjoy the fireplace and absorb the history this is where you will want to spend your time. The main pub had a fire going with saw dust covered floors (ask why and you will get a brief but very cool history lesson) and plenty of cool memorabilia.
I assume this place gets busy later in the day because there is a large back bar and patio. Both very nice.
We arrived on a Tuesday around 11:30am and were greeted by Timmy when we walked in with a smile and conversation. The entire staff including Luke were super friendly and helpful. They allowed us to try on souvenirs while pouring us delicious, ice cold pints of Guinness. After a discussion with Timmy we decided on two bottles of Sean’s Irish whiskey special blend ($40). They also sell a single malt ($50).
This was an absolute highlight of the trip for me and the next time in Ireland I plan to stay in Athlone and spend more time here.
Cheers!

this is truly a traditional Irish bar. The people are friendly and it is quite lively. I would recommend people come to see this place. It’s supposedly is one of the oldest bars and Ireland back to the 900. We really didn’t care about that, but we did appreciate the kindness, openness, and the friendliness of everyone I would highly recommend coming. Here is staying in the town. I wish we knew about this sooner. We were just passing by.

The oldest bar in the world!! What a fun place to visit. We never knew this and our tour guide wanted us to see it even though it was not on our tour. We just stopped in to take some pictures but the food did look good and they had such a friendly staff. A must see if you are anywhere near Athlone, Ireland!!

Rumor has it, this is either the oldest bar in the world or the oldest bar in Ireland. There are other places that make similar claims, so I don't know. But this place is OLD and super cool! Picture what you might think an Irish pub to look, smell and feel like - that's it! There is sawdust on the floors, very low ceilings, dim lighting with beautiful beams of sunlight through the windows, history covering the walls, music, the smell of burning sod, friendly people - it's really got everything! Out back, there is a newer portion that is much larger, more modern and spacious, but we were fortunate to sit right up front and you could feel the history on those stools.
The town of Athlone was a pleasant surprise, as well! We had a nice lunch next door to Sean's Bar at an International Restaurant (I forget the name) and then strolled around the town admiring the castle, the river and the quaint shops. We all wish we had more knowledge of this town before booking our trip, as we might have planned to spend more time here!

Heard a lot about the rich history in Sean’s Bar… Had to see this place for myself… The Oldest Bar in Ireland (and possibly Europe or even the World), Sean’s got its start in 900 AD as Luain’s Inn. Today, it impresses with much of what makes a traditional, authentic Irish pub. It is OLD!!! Saw dust on the floor, cozy, old fireplace… but… it’s super crowded… all the time… That, unfortunately, takes away from what could be an impressive, unique experience… Still, very cool to see & visit…

Dropped in last night with some work colleagues as we over from England what a grand pub, open fire, sawdust shaving on the floor loads of history on the walls. But the Guinness was fantastic what better way to spend our last night in Ireland than Sean’s bar a must visit will return.

The two lads performing were the best I have ever heard in a bar. Amazing talent. I’m nearly 50 and it has amazed me. I didn’t talk to my mates as it was too good.
