The Oldest Bar in the World!
Sep 2020 • Couples
Such a lovely bar to go and visit! One of the oldest’s in the world! Unfortunately it was closed when we went down to see it due to COVID but it was still such a treat to check out!

Bouncers are pigs
Sep 2019 • Friends
Went here with a group last year for 40th celebrations.
Staff seem to favour American tourists who are enamored by the "oldest bar in Ireland label".
Bouncers were pigs and kicked two of our party out the back doors for simply stepping up on benches. Canopy covering security cameras conveniently. Have heard similar reports from others regarding bouncing staff before

Cool Spot with Great History
Sep 2019
We made it a point to come here on our trip through Ireland this past fall. It added a little extra travel time one day but was well worth the visit, you have to stop in the oldest pub in Ireland given the chance. It's a cool spot in a great town full of great people. We spent some time with Declan who took us through the history of the pub along with some fun stories passed down from long ago. Definitely worth stopping in for some cold Guinness and good food in a place that's been around since the Dark Ages!

Drink and learn
Jul 2019
Thee oldest bar, we stumble across Sean when walking back from the castle. It’s a most!! Please visit, and enjoy a warming Irish coffee or a chilled beer. You’re able to book a guided tour with a bartender, who was a true gentleman and completely loved his job. Thank you for a memorable experience and highly recommended.

Do a shift in Sean's bar
Sep 2019
We stopped in Athlone when coming back from Galway to Dublin on the train purely on the promise of visiting the oldest bar in Ireland and probably most anywhere. We arrived on a rainy day just before noon and enjoyed a fantastic Irish coffee. We slipped out for a nice lunch at the Portside Restaraunt and returned for the afternoon to Sean's. We met many friendly tourists from all around the area. Spent a wonderful afternoon that carried on till the evening. Really a highlight of my Irish visit

The Real Irish Pub Experience
Mar 2020
Can not believe what an amazing time we had. If you are looking for an authentic Irish pub experience, and longing to feel all the charm the Irish locals have then this is your place. The bartenders Paul, and Brendan "Dougie" (sorry if I spelled any of that wrong) where amazingly welcoming and the stories that the whole bar's patron's joined in on and embellished kept all the infectious laughter going. I have to say that the people we met in this bar had the most welcoming and inclusive manner. I felt instantly at home and encouraged to join in the conversations. One of the bartenders in fact told us that they intentionally kept the bar TV and Wifi free to encourage camaraderie and real human connections. Later in the evening there was a band playing an acoustic set of Irish Country music, that was really a treat. We want to go back. Our trip from Texas to Ireland was long, the journey arduous and expensive for us, but Sean's made the whole thing worth it. We had only allotted a short time to Athlone, and now we want to return just to stay there and spend a few more nights laughing around the peat moss hearth fire.

Lovely and cosy , very friendly staff. Outside was nice and warm with heaters. My husband said their pints were so good the best he has had in a long time.

Must Visit
Mar 2020 • Solo
Went to Sean’s Bar a couple of times during my stay in Athlone. The first night I was in town I dropped by around 8pm and ordered an Irish coffee. The bar was busy so I sat at a table and I found out later that I was there too early for the live music. The next day I stopped in around mid-afternoon and the bar was much quieter, with a small group of fellow-tourists and a couple locals. I had a pint of Orchard Thieves cider (which if you like sweet ciders is excellent!) and one of the barmen gave a little talk about the history of the bar, which I was happy to be there for. I was also given a pamphlet about the bar and offered the guest book to sign. I wanted to go back in the evening after 10 to hear the live music, but didn’t get a chance. Being the oldest pub in Ireland, Sean’s Bar is a must-visit when you’re in the Athlone area.
