Lonely Planet Experiences: Private Whiskey Distillery Excursion

Spend a day sampling some of the finest whisky on this distillery tour!

Drive to the Hidden Heartlands of Ireland and to the river Shannon. Travelling into the centre of Ireland, your first stop will be to Kilbeggan Distillery for a guided tour. Kilbeggan Distillery produces Lockes Whiskey which has been on this site for a few centuries and boasts old machinery and traditions as you see the whiskey making process in full.

Your route takes you a little further west to Lough Ree and a nice pub lunch in the sleepy little village of Glasson. After lunch, you will be brought into the historical town of Athlone where you can drop into Ireland's and possibly the oldest working pub in the world, 'Sean's Bar'. Sean's Bar now boasts its own whiskey and you will learn a little about Lough Ree and its connection to the origins of whiskey making. Passing by Athlone Castle and the River Shannon, you will finish up enjoying a tour at the Tullamore Dew Whiskey Distillery.

The gallery is located on the river and the light pouring in through the glass lined corridor is stunning in itself. The gallery features different local artists and is well worth a visit. Some beautiful thought provoking pieces on display. Their is currently no admission charge.

The Luan Gallery is currently featuring three exhibits. They were all unique in their different ways. Clare Scott’s Folie á Deux was abstract and Dr. Seussian in the best possible way. My favorite though was Elaine Hoey’s Surface Tension that features a VR experience that actually places you literally in the art. It focuses on nationalism and the European response to the rise in issues related to nationalism, particularly migration. I highly recommend anyone in town to stop by and do the VR experience - the graphics are incredibly good, better than I’ve seen at theme parks in Orlando where I’m from.

What an amazing and beautiful space. My wife and I enjoyed the space and exhibit very much. It was nice to sit on the benches and stare out at the river. We were lucky to catch an exhibit that was not only from local artists, but in the print medium, one we very much liked. It was clean, spacious and well lit. It will be my joy to return.

Exhibitions will vary, naturally, so what is on offer during your visit will effect your view but we were delighted during our recent visit.
