Nice clothing and homewares store that has a rich history in Athlone. There are some information boards down by the Shannon that explain some of the history of Burgess’s.

Just popped in to Ireland’s oldest department store. Although the styles were a little to mature for me I recognised the excellent brands stocked.

This firm is a long established firm which moves with the times. Whether you are in search of clothes (casual or dress) for men, women or children, or household items such as towels, bedding, tableware, cookware etc you can be sure to find what you're looking for in Burgess. I have known and loved this shop for well over 50 years, as a child one of the great attractions was the overhead cash carriers which brought the payments from each department to a central office for processing and sent back the correct change to the customer. In recent years I have got many great bargains ranging from 'American Tourister' luggage to sheets and towels, kitchen utensils and cookware. Thanks to Burgess I can now cook the perfect poached egg! The secret is to buy a packet (or two) of poachies - ingenious pouches which keeps the poached egg together and perfect every time.
Independent Department stores are as rare as hens teeth in Ireland - those that survive deserve our custom. WIth the Church Street enhancement works in Athlone almost complete hopefully Burgess will enjoy even greater popularity.

Burgess Department Store was founded in 1839, and is 'officially' Ireland's longest established Department Store. This is a very large retail shop, situated in Church St, on Athlone’s main shopping thoroughfare, and is divided into a number of small departments each dealing with one or two lines of goods, such boy’s suits and footwear, to take 2 examples. This store acts as a supplier of a wide variety of goods, from ladies and mens’ fashion to footwear and from children’s needs to home supplies. The store is very convenient for local shoppers, as for instance, a newly married couple can purchase most of their requirements to set up a home, at this one place. I do not think they have a mail-order section but this department store might consider opening one as it caters for shoppers throughout the Midlands. As they say “You don’t thrive for over a century without striving for more”. Great job.

Been to this place multiple times and alway found it to be good for different options.
Quality stuff!
Some of the staff were not friendly enough and on one occasion found them to be not professional.Paid in advance for an order and waited for weeks . Never received what ordered for and had to settle for some leftover stuff of different measurement!
Had to make multiple visits and never got a proper response.
It's a pity such a nice outlet has this issue.

Mid-priced old established department store. It has a range of styles and prices and the staff are very helpful and, thankfully, not at all pushey.
