About
Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto "Fortune favours the strong" and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto "Powerful by land and by sea", were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.

The guide had a lot to say about this tower house of the 1500s and it was all very interesting as an insight into the people of those times. The informaation boards were clear and interesting too. Altogether a surprise find that was well worth the trip. Recommended

This fortified strong house is well worth a visit. Located a few miles south of Oughterard on the Galway rd the castle costs 5 euros to enter but is worth the price. There is free parking nearby and then a short 2 minute walk to the entrance.

The person selling tickets was very knowledgeable and briefly summarised the history of the castle. There is also a leaflet telling the history of the place that can be purchased. However, the exhibition inside the 6 storey strong house gives a complete history.

When we visited all floors of the strong house were accessible bar the roof. Be aware that this is an original structure and so the upper floors of the strong house can only be accessed via a narrow and steep spiral staircase. There is a handrail. It is a lovely spot to have a picnic if the weather is fine.

Only the bottom level is open due to Covid restrictions. Site was compleet free of charge to enter (for August or all of 2021, I'm unsure.) Guides are friendly and eager to share info, got my gruesome twosome excited about the murder hole. It is a pity you can't picnic onsite but I can understand if people have littered previously.

This is a great place to visit. The OPW member, called Giles, is a mine of information and it's fascinating to see all the history of the castle

Aughnanure is a few minutes outside Oughterard off the main road to Dubkun. It is realky well worth a visit.
It dates from the 15th century, it was a fortified house of the O'Flaherty's. You can visit the ground floor of the keep at the moment but hopefully post covid you'll be able to go into the other floors.
There is a watchtower, curiously positioned inside the van and the remains of defensive was snd thd banquet Hall.
The entrance fee is currently waived as the OPW are trying to promote domestic tourism post covid. A good information sheet is provided by staff at the gate.
Plenty of parking and the whole place has been beautifully maintained.

Wonderful rare example of a Gaelic tower house. The castle and grounds are well-preserved. There is plenty of information available, and the guides are extremely informative and engaging. Only the ground floor of the castle is open currently, so we will definitely return once restrictions allow for it to be fully opened.

It was a pity the main living quarters tower was closed because of Covid but the grounds were beautiful. It’s a small area but worth a stop in if you’re in the area. Would visit here and glengalow mines in the same trip as they’re near by to each other. No toilets available or cafe etc but a great piece of Irish history here And the O’flagherty family.

It was fascinating to see and enter the castle -- especially seeing and reading about the Tower House, with its "murder hole" and secret chamber! The walk along the river to the castle, as well as the castle grounds themselves (with its Yew trees), are beautiful. Well worth a visit!

Our B&B hostess recommended this castle. We enjoyed it particularly because there were no crowds. There's rich history and lovely views.
