What a magnificent experience it was to sail to Ireland’s Eye and explore this wonderful uninhabited little island oasis. It is like landing on a little patch of the Wild Atlantic Way that has been moved to the east coast...maybe it was picked up and thrown over in ancient times by Finn McCool, Cuchulainn or one of the other legendary Irish warriors! :)
Captain Mark Doyle from Island Ferries was a gent and given the unseasonably warm winter weather and calm conditions was able to land me safely on the island so I could enjoy its many natural and historical treasures, including an ancient church / monastic site and one of the best preserved Martello towers in Ireland.
The views were spectacular, especially from the summit and the spectacular sea cliffs overlooking ‘The Stack’, and it was so peaceful - a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of Dublin and even Howth which can be quite busy itself these days.
As I wandered around the island I enjoyed the natural background music of many birds (it is a nationally important home to many breeding seabirds including a gannet colony) and seals - I came across a colony of over 20 seals basking in the Winter sun on the rocks at the far side of the island & they put on an impromptu show for me diving in and out of the water, magic! :)
It was so relaxing to escape the crowds and immerse myself in nature. Ireland’s Eye is so close to Dublin, only 10-15 minute sailing from Howth harbour, but it felt like I was a million miles away holidaying abroad! :) I can’t wait to return.
