Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Howth Castle is still a private residence and tours can be arranged and they have public tours in August and September which can be booked on their website. The castle is impressive and well maintained. Next year I must go and visit.

It is breathtaking to contemplate such a beautiful historical construction. I visited this magical place with my family, they loved it.

Many complaints on Tripadvisor regarding not being able to go in to the castle... well... PEOPLE LIVE THERE. I wouldn't want anyone touring the inside of my house either on a daily basis. The fact that the owners of this beautiful old castle let people walk around their home and take pictures was enough for me. The history behind the castle is amazing and can be seen in the different additions... from the original first building and subsequent eras... they can all be seen, enjoyed and photographed. I have since found out that the entire estate has been sold, including the golf course... I might have been lucky enough to be one of the last people allowed to visit this historic property. No complaints here. It is a beautiful landmark that should definitely be on your agenda in Howth.

Beautiful castle. No need for a tour. Just go walk around the castle and take some photos while you're in Howth. Inside not open to the public.

We did not book in advance so were not able to tour the actual castle itself. Outside is rather plain, Norman style castle up a short road from the main road leading into Howth. I’m not sure it’s worth the walk unless you have a particular urge to see a castle.

Visiting this castle and its excellent grounds is a must. The guided tour gave us so much information about the time period and furnishings. It's not very long so the tour isn't overwhelming. Plan to picnic on the lovely grounds.

It’s a short DART ride from central Dublin, then a 5-7 min walk from Howth train station. It’s a smallish castle, with private residences so no interior visit. It looks a Norman castle. The tower, the wall on the entrance, and gate all look in a state of disrepair, with flowering weeds that had been left to grow. The grounds are also private, so one needs only a short stroll. Unceremonious visit but still

I rated this a 4 because I just love all castles! The history behind it is really cool so when you go make sure you google it first! I just walked around the grounds - I didn’t go on any tours. I enjoyed myself. It was fairly quick to see.

You pass it on the way into Howth if your driving and if you arrive by Train you'll have to walk back towards Dublin . Its well worth the trip up the hill and the views are spectacular.

A more interesting story than a stop in the winter. In the summer you can play foot golf, though, which apparently saved the island from being raised for low-income housing. Very friendly dog and good history.
