- 16jessien1 contributionHidden gemSaw the friary from the road and decided to stop in and check it out. Anthony was there offering tours. Hands down one of the best tours I’ve ever been on! Anthony is an absolute gentleman and a very knowledgeable historian. Tour was fun and educational.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 May 2023
- Renee GPuyallup, Washington1 contributionDon’t miss this hidden gem!My mom and I were driving from Dingle to Limerick via the Wild Atlantic Way when we saw a sign for the Desmond Castle and turned off to explore. While the castle isn’t open to the public right now, down the road is the Franciscan Friary. We happened upon Anthony who invited us to join the tour in progress, and it was the best tour we’ve been on in our time in Ireland! He is very knowledgeable about both the Friary and the castle and he is very engaging and personable. A bright spot in our already wonderful trip! Don’t miss this hidden gem.Visited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 May 2023

But here we met Anthony Sheehy, the best - ever - guide. You can listen to him without getting bored, he knows a lot of things about the place and around, as he is living in the area. - Andy D2 contributionsBrilliant tour. Amazing piece of history and the tour guide was brilliant.Absolutely brilliant tour. Just went for a stroll and happened to bump into Anthony Sheehy the local tour guide. I’m from the area myself and have been to the Friary a few times but Anthony pointed out features I would have never spotted. He has incredible knowledge of the history of the friary and the surrounding area. The Friary itself is the arguable best preserved piece of history in Limerick. The cloisters and gothic window are the highlight.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 September 2023
- Compass487722714504 contributionsFree Irish history lesson, music and poetry from a local who loves what they do.My husband and I were driving through Ireland on a road trip in June, and we saw the top of the friary from the road. We decided to stop by, and wander into the beautiful architecture, stumbling upon a gentleman giving a tour to one other lone couple. Anthony Sheehy is his name. He quickly invited us into his tour and caught us up to speed on what we had missed so far. Turns out, he is a local to Askeaton with deep personal ties to the friary and a wealth of knowledge learned through his family history. His love and admiration for what he does (sharing himself through tourism) is tangible and touching. At the end of the tour, he played a couple songs in his harmonica and even recited a beautiful poem for our group. My husband and I stayed afterward for quite a while to chat with him and the other couple. He has a great way of bringing everyone together if you'll let him. This roadside excursion was a must if you enjoy learning the history of Ireland and connecting with the Irish locals.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 September 2023

We opted for him to give us the tour and we were NOT disappointed!!! It was not your typical big attraction tour. It was so intimate and special as it was just the 3 of us. To top it off, when we were done, he played 2 songs for us on his harmonica. Such a special touch. This was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023

We were fortunate to happen upon and be provided a tour by resident guide and local historian Anthony Sweeney. He provided a very informative tour and pointed out details that would not be observed by the casual visitor. Anthony's knowledge was quite comprehensive and well worth the donation for his time.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 November 2023

Don't pass through Askeaton without stopping off. You will meet there the most wonderful and adorable tour guide. His name is Anthony Sheehy. 👍
He can tell you all the stories and history of the castle and the friary in this town but also much more! All well documented with pictures or sketches.
To listen him talking, singing or playing harmonica is an experience! ❤️
We have learned a lot about this town thanks to him.
It's a great man with a good heart and it was a pleasure and a chance to meet him 😊
