- BraindamagedbaronNewark-on-Trent, United Kingdom1,796 contributionsSumptuous even in biblical weatherCobh is a little gem and overlooked for places like Cork that seem to hold the interest. But Cobh more than holds it's own. A glorious town in a wonderfully scenic location and you really should make a point of visiting. The Cathedral itself is stunning, a gorgeous building. It was blowing a mighty gale when we were there and it was all we could do to remain upright but it didn't detract or deter. So much so that we visited twice that week and enjoyed the second visit equally. The weather didn't relent though!Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 March 2024
- OphthalmicEyeManchester, United Kingdom139 contributionsEaster Sunday Mass in superb cathedralAn amazing imposing neo-Gothic building. Beautiful. Architecture by the famous Pugin family. Stands proud on hill overlooking Cork Harbour. The last Church that would have been seen by the Titanic passengers, I guess.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 April 2024
- powertoartVecchiano, Italy823 contributionsNothing short of extraordinary. The neo-Gothic you don't expectA cathedral whose neo-Gothic style requires careful observation so as not to be confused with period Gothic, at least as regards the interiors (the external structure - at first sight - blends in with many other Irish neo-Gothic cathedrals): the quantity of light that penetrates inside from the various openings - and especially from the decorated windows - is perhaps more coherently in line with many artefacts of the 13th and 14th centuries, rather than with the neo-medieval frenzy of the late 19th century, which is much darker and more marked - if anything - to the late Gothic (i.e. to the Gothic following the plague of 1350). In a stunning location, it's worth waiting for a sunny day in Ireland just to go and see itVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2024
- Anthony GWellington, New Zealand1,474 contributionsGlorious Ecclesiastical ArchitectureI’m not religious (anymore) but you can’t help but feel ‘spiritual’ or show reverence when your in building of this kind. Jutting out on the Cobh cliff side sits this magnificent example of what Christianity can do with all its money and influence. I wish it put more of its funds to good use. None the less this is a wonderful building to walk round, observe, appreciate and if you’re that way inclined, pray. Thoroughly recommend you go!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 June 2024
- AlbertSalichsManresa, Spain24,073 contributionsVery beautiful cathedralCobh Cathedral is the most important religious building in Cobh, a port city close to Cork, in the South of Ireland. The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Colman and it began to be built in the middle of the 19th Century and it was finished at the beginning of the 20th Century. It was built in a Gothic style and it has a tall bell tower, which you can see from almost all sides of the town. Also, from the entrance of the church and surrounding it, you can see very nice views of the sea. We could go inside, and it has a very nice main nave and altar. Very beautiful place. The building is nothing short of spectacular, both inside and outside. It is full of history and stories around it. The photos do not really do it justice and in no way give you an idea of the scale of the building.
A beautiful building inside with amazing stone and woodwork. Not to mention the stained glass and paintings.
There is no entry fee, however there is a donation box as you enter with the contactless card option to donate 5 euro.
It's a bit of a climb but well worth the effort. If you are in Cobh this is a must see.

We only glanced at the Cathedral, which seemed pleasant enough. But a steep street leading down to the Cathedral caught our attention more. There are 24 or so houses all painted differently and all connected in a row. We walked up and down, taking photos. A sign at the top told us that the houses are known locally as the "pack of cards". There were plenty of others who had the same reaction, with tourists from all over doing what we did. Don't miss this.

The guide inside seem keener to explain why there was a gap in the pews, a large globe is not there at the moment, rather than anything about the cathedral, which is a relatively modern structure. Difficult to park anywhere near.. It is relatively bland inside but is set in a spectacular position overlooking the town,

Gorgeous church. We were amused by the nets through which one had to traverse in and out of the church (to stop the pigeons getting in. I can imagine it could be really problematic if a pigeon came in - how could you get it out?). The panels of Jesus' crucifixion were beautifully rendered and sobering.

My first visit to Cobh in a good few years, I wouldn't leave out a visit to beautiful St. Colman's. It's so serene with great views of the town and harbour below.
Inside is cavernous and tranquil. Softly lit it was lovely to sit in there and listen to the wind howl outside. Lovely vaulted ceiling, beautiful altar and some magnificent carvings into the walls high up to the sides near the altar. A must see if you're in the town and completely free.

It is a hike from the shoreline to get up there. It was worth it.
There was no fee to view the interior. The stain glass windows were very detailed. The light streams in on the south side. The cathedral has flying buttresses and gargoyles that are fun to check out. It is adjacent to the photogenic houses on the hillside so you can hit that while you are up the hill by the cathedral.

The Cobh Cathedral or St Colman’s Cathedral is truly a pride of Cobh.
Standing on top of the hill, this prominent church is a must-visit not just for engineering and architecture students but also for casual tourists and pilgrims.
There’s a lot to marvel on this mid 19th century gothic building. Roam around and admire the statues of saints and sentry monsters. There’s some very fine stoneworks, carvings and stained glass windows on the interior too.
Another feature of this church is the carillon or 49 bells that play on regular intervals and a special recital on Sunday 4:30 p.m. during summer.
Unlike other cathedrals in Europe, St Colman has no admission charge. Walk up the hill or park your car at back of the church and have a moment with this magnificent building and I’m telling you you won’t regret it.

We were lucky to get a parking space across the road. A tour guide greeted us at the door with an information leaflet and offered to answer any questions. The altar and pulpit are beautiful and you can see that the best of everything went into this building which is the pride of Cobh. Well worth visiting.

Cobh is a very pretty town which has brightly painted buildings and beautiful floral displays. Even on an extremely stormy day the civic pride shines through.
The gothic cathedral is worth the steep walk, particularly the exterior. We were unable to have a proper look inside as a mass was being celebrated but there are some lovely, intricate carving and stunning stained glass windows. The views from the outside, over the town and harbour, are fantastic, even in the rain.
A few comments about the rest of the town:
There are many links to shipbuilding, in particular the Titanic. Another tragic memory for the town is the sinking of the Lusitania. There are monuments to both these ships with a number of venues to visit for further information eg. The Titanic Experience. We did not visit these as we had limited time as we had to return to our cruise ship but we did go into the Cobh Heritage Centre which has a few eating places and a selection pf Titanic attractions.

Parking at this church is free if you are going to the Titanic Museum. Give thanks by making a small donation and taking plenty of photographs inside this gorgeous church. It is fully functional, so be considerate.

How long does it usually take to visit the cathedral?
Written 23 April 2017
Most people spend 10-15 minutes around the cathedral as there's so much detail inside
Outside the views are stunning
Hope to see you soon

Hi, Greg. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Is there a tour of the inside of the church or do you visit the outside only? I could not find anything on the inside of the church.
thanks
Greg

There is a local historian who gives walking tours around cobh but im not sure if they take you inside the church itself but im sure they would answer any questions you may have.

This was absolutely our favorite of the cathedrals in Ireland and we couldn't more highly recommend that you visit. We knew nothing about an entry fee and alas there is none so there should be no problem in visiting. If at all possible try to go when you know there is some kind of service because the acoustics are phenomenal. We were extremely fortunate to arrive while a wedding was going on and it was glorious, the singing from the choir loft was like angels reining down with heavenly anthems. We had a rent a car so we parked down the hill and walked up but I am sure you will have easy access from anyone and even a taxi can shuttle you there for less than 15 Euros for 3 people from downtown Cork. The drive is beautiful and to walk along the waterway to the south of the cathedral and to tour the museum of the Titanic is also something you should not miss. Have a fabulous time we did, Ireland is a gorgeous country and the locals love the Americans remember to be polite as we noticed many Americans were demanding, we want to leave them with good memories of us and welcome us back.
