Myself and my wife were staycationing in Glengarriff last week, and decided to have lunch in Castletownbere, last Sunday. MacCarthys Bar was our chosen destination, having read and thoroughly enjoyed Pete MacCarthys book. Wow, were we in for a surprise......MacCarthys Bar was CLOSED. This is a bar that was serving food pre-Covid-19 but decided to remain closed (along with every other eatery, except for one, in Castletownbere). During the course of our staycation, we discussed the lack of open bars/restaurants in Castletownbere with other locals on the Beara peninsula, and everyone told us the same thing....that Castletownbere was a disaster this year. Clearly, the owners of these establishments have decided that the Government Covid payments are a more attractive proposition to them, than opening their doors to tourists. Castletownbere, you are a total and utter disgrace to Irish tourism, especially this year.…

A must stopoff if you are in or passing through Castletownbere. You'll get pub grub, a coffee or a drink in atmospheric surroundings. Then go out and buy one of the late great Pete McCarthy's books, The Road to McCarthy being my own personal favourite. If you read the books first, you won't need any encouragement to drop in here.…

If you are in the Castletownbere area do not miss a trip to MacCarthy's Pub. The two sisters who are the owners are gracious and inviting. One even sat with us and let us take pictures. Truly a step back in time, this local pub lives up to all of the hype it receives and the book written about it. They also serve some awesome hot toddies! …

Smaller than I remember from 10 years ago, but buzzing atmosphere & excellent pint of Guinness, the old corner shop grocery store still prevails. Our holiday friends are McCarthy's they thought it was good fun. Liked the town of Castletownbere some good places to get fresh chowders.…
