From start to finish it was an extraordinary experience - this was a world renowned pianist at home performing magnificently in the wonderful ambience of his sitting room, on a grand piano. He was accompanied by a Welsh tenor and delicious food was served at the interval by his partner, Suzanne.

This is a truly unique experience and I am so lucky to live within driving distance of Ahabeg and this wonderful man and his lovely wife. You will be spoilt here because not only do you get to listen to David's sublime piano playing in a cosy living room, you also have the pleasure of tasting Suzanne's divine baking, as well as the beauty of the location (in the lee of Hungry Hill overlooking the ocean on the Beara peninsula), the tip-tap of Jess the dog's paws and the delightful conversations and atmosphere. You come for the music but leave filled up to the brim with diverse experiences, a warm heart, enthralled mind and satisfied belly.

What an amazing afternoon. This is our second time to David’s beautiful home and his amazing living room concert and it certainly won’t be the last. This time we surprised our friends with tickets as we were home from England for the weekend. Our friends absolutely loved it.

David had a guest with him on this particular afternoon (Keith Pascoe) who played the violin, and oh my goodness they had us memorised for the afternoon.
If you are ever in Castletownbere - this is a must. Tickets were €25 which was well worth the money.

The additional bonus to the afternoon was David’s wife Suzanne’s baking. You are treated to an array of home baking with wine and coffee. It was such a beautiful afternoon and the views are amazing.

If you are looking for something unique this is a must for everyone. The music is phenomenal and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you again for a wonderful afternoon.

I am a professional classical pianist and on our recent tour of Ireland my husband and I attended last Sunday's recital by David Syme at his home near Castletownbere, County Cork. It was absolutely great: wonderful piano music beautifully played by David; a feast of superb baking (by Suzanne); a friendly welcome from the dog, Jess; a very receptive and appreciative audience, all in a spectacular setting indoors and outdoors. This was our first visit but we were made to feel very much at home, and I'm sure we will go back again.

An afternoon in David and Suzanne’s West Cork home is a true feast for the senses.
David is a virtuoso on the ivories. He interacts cordially with all guests, taking requests and involving everyone in the performance. It is a challenge to find a piece, modern or classic that he cannot play.
The interval brings a feast for another set of senses. Generous offerings of delicious desserts, cheeses and wines, prepared by Suzanne and her assistant Gareth. A few moments to take in the surroundings, the views of Bantry Bay and Bere Island and its times for round two.
The second half sees David work his way through even more requests and a few of his rapturous favourites.
This is a must do afternoon for anyone of any musical taste. He is an amazing performer, what luck to be have him call West Cork home and entertain as he does.

Came across this concert by chance as we were staying at a cottage nearby in West Cork. We regularly attend symphonic performances in concert halls, but to hear the artistry in the intimacy of the performers living room is a very different experience. Every nuance and intent of the performers interpretation can be appreciated. An added bonus to the performance of the Rach PC #1 was the Brahms Violin Sonata with Keith Pascoe. Brahms is one of my favorite orchestra composers and this performance brought out the brilliance of his chamber works, especially in this setting. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon along with the wonderful desserts. Certainly one of the memorable highlights of our trip to Ireland.

It is impossible to argue with any of the glowing opinions of previous reviewers, but I feel I should add a little warning - if you are an amateur (or not so amateur) pianist, prepare for mixed feelings afterwards. You will be excited and very impressed by David's performances but perhaps a little depressed with your own standard of achievement. In my own case I am both inspired to try to improve my own (amateur) playing and wondering how on earth David is able to organise his astonishingly deep and wide memory. I remember a performance of the Gypsy Dance from Carmen whirling by which apparently David had not performed for about forty years

Also impressive is the range of styles encompassed in an all too short afternoon.

The previous reviewers do not exaggerate the quality of the interval treats, and there cannot be many guests who regret waving a temporary farewell to their diets!

Altogether then, a truly delightful Sunday afternoon for any visitors to the area whatever their musical taste - regulars need not be reminded - and it does not have to be raining.

This concert was a rare delight, in an intimate home setting. Fabulous desserts, cheeses and drinks were offered in the interval, which we enjoyed on the patio outside with glorious views over the sea.

David played a wide variety of music, largely classical but with many modern pieces from Gershwin through to Led Zeppelin. All played with passion and insight, so I enjoyed and appreciated music that had left me cold previously. My whole family (ages 19-85) enjoyed the concert, which got a standing ovation from the audience at the end.

Before attending I had submitted a query on David's website, as the concert dates for this year had not at that time been published. I was surprised and delighted to get a friendly phone call back from David in person, confirming that there was indeed a concert in the week of my family holiday in Ireland. David was most helpful and reserved places for us in advance of the online booking going live.

The house is well signposted from the main road - look for the piano signs. One at the top of Knockane off the R572, one on the right further down (with lots of car parking at the top of a drive), one at the bottom of the drive with more car parking - very close to the house, and the best choice for less mobile visitors.
