Good Easy Hike - Great Views on a Clear Day
Sep 2021
I was in Portmagee for the day and decided to take the Bray Head Loop Trail. In general, it is easy to find - very few roads on the island, so, you are destined to pass the signs. Despite it being a beautiful Saturday afternoon, there weren't many people there. I paid my 2euro for the car park and headed off. The trail is to the old watchtower. The views are pretty amazing. It was a clear day and I could see the Kerry Cliffs, the Skelligs and up the Northern coastline. Many people just hike to the watchtower and head back to the car park. The grade is about 15-20'ish degrees -so, not hard but not easy either - take your time. From the watchtower, you can continue to climb and get treated to even greater views. From there, you have to decide to either go back down to the watchtower and head back or complete the loop. I completed the loop - it had not rained in several days and the path (not well marked) back was fairly dry. After a while, the path seemed to disappear and I was basically just skipping from Sheep trail to Sheep trail to make my way back to the car park. All in all, it was a good hike -not very taxing and fairly quick <2.5 hours including my stops.

Fabulous

If you get the chance to enjoy this gift of nature, don't hesitate. The air is pure and fresh and the walks are spectacular. It is not a walk you will regret, even if, like me, you only go half way.

Not to be missed

Thoroughly enjoyed the Bray Head loop walk. Make sure you have €2 for the car park. Very gradual climb up a dirt track to the old watchtower. The views out to Skellig Michael are amazing so make sure you go on a clear day. You can head back down the same way or follow the signs for the loop walk. Well worth it but boggy and uneven ground so you need sturdy footwear.

Amazing Views!!!
Sep 2019
This place is off the beaten path! But if you are in the mood for a bit of walking, and want to see some wonderful views without the crowds.. this is the place to go. Park your car at the Bray Head Car Park, which is little more than a dirt lot. Then continue on the dirts road and explore till your hearts content. You can wander off the path in relative safety. You will most likely encounter sheep and cows along your path, but no worries. Enjoy the view and solitude of this magical place!!

I am not a walker. However, I pushed myself to the end and was rewarded with a magnificent view of the peninsula.

Absolutely worth it but a fair warning!

It is so worth it to drive the one-lane sized road to this place. It was easy to park, it cost €2 and there were plenty of spaces. The walk itself up to the highest point (which is a bit further than the farmhouse remains) is not very challenging and the views are spectacular. Out of this world spectacular.
So we wondered why no one else seemed to be doing the loop and was instead only going up to the high point and then down. And we found out why the hard way! The second part of the loop is rarely walked and is super super muddy. So muddy. We wrecked our walking shoes. It was such a mess. We couldn’t follow the actual trail since we got a little lost looking for dry land. Then we tried to rejoin the first part of the walk which basically meant we were going down the hill on our own like a bunch of crazies. Almost no one else did the second part of this loop. There was no one behind us. And the 2 people in front of us managed to find another way to rejoin the first part of the walk.
Bottom line: absolutely worth it! But go to the top and then back down. If you start the second part and you keep hoping it will get better and less muddier - it won’t! Stick to the tried and true :) The views are way better on that side anyway!

Wild and beautiful

Today four of us drove over the land bridge connecting Valentia Island with the rest of Kerry. We drove up to the main car park at the base of the Bray Head Loop walk. 6euro to park and drive around the loop but we left it and climbed up and up and up. Three car parks along the way up. The views are spectacular. Panoramic to Skellig Michael and on the other side The Blaskets.
We cracked on around the loop.. Got our ten thousand steps in :)).
Not suitable for any one with a dicky heart or breathing issues. Too steep to walk but you could drive.
Bring walking poles if balance is an issue. But it's so worth it. Afterwards we drove down to Knights Town for tea and cake and to take the ferry across to get to Cahersiveen. A great day out.
