We were doing the Sky Road trip , a beautiful road worth driving , and came across the Clifden Castle. The views down over the fields with the ocean in the background was amazing. It was a perfect sunny day to.

The reason for a 4 rating is that the Castle is not well signposted & a bit of a walk down from the road. Not easy to park along most parts of Sky Roads. From what I gather you cross over private farms to get to the Castle so not sure if thats why its not well signed.

Apart from that the buildings are in good condition & worth the 10 min or so stroll down the hill , the views alone make this a worthwhile visit

Beautiful walk and absolutely gorgeous scenery, definitely worth the visit! The walk is not difficult and is about 5km in length.

Though there is not much left of the castle, we enjoyed our walk from the remaining gates on the Sky Road down to the ruins past a field with a mare and her foal. It was a quick visit but pleasant.

Lovely 1800s Castle, now, sadly, fallen into disrepair. Atmospheric & gives an insight into what it once was!

This was interesting to see but it isn’t a destination place to look around so worth a visit if you’re passing. It’s a short walk down to it from the road, going through the arch and walking down the farm track. There’s lovely views and it’s atmospheric to see. Once at the castle it’s a building ruins with no information and no safety features either. Kids liked it but it didn’t take up as much time as we thought it would.

Nice scenic walk down to the Castle. About 1km down. Fair play to the owner to allow access. Saw fab standing stones and sheep and Connemara ponies on the way. If it’s been raining the last leg can be tricky as the path floods but it was manageable. The castle itself was built in 1818 apparently. A shadow of its former glory and a bit of a wreck but interesting nonetheless. It’s free so a grand way to pass an hour and get some exercise and fresh air!

We visited this castle off the sky rd , you have to park out on the road before the arches, there's about a 15min walk down to the castle with great views, wear good footwear . The castle is beautiful just a pity they wouldn't get local community workers or someone to restore it , hate the thought of it crumbling

A mile up the sky loop road and then a short walk down to the castle from the gates. Stunning views on the way down and a nice interesting castle to explore. Certainly worth half an hour of your day.

Wish this place was better signposted & had more information ... An awesome building in a stunning location and actually in seemingly excellent repair compared to many other Irish castles - would happily have paid for a tour to give history and insight into the various rooms etc.

I had a hunch it was privately owned due to the nature of the trail etc & upon doing some googling discovered it is owned by local farmers hence no signs/information boards have been erected which is understandable.

Am glad the proprietors allow access to the building but such a shame it has continued to fall into ruin since being abandoned in the late 1800s.

Definitely worth a visit, walk down to it is pretty short but path is well kept, remember to bring wellies or walking boots if it has recently rained as the last part of the path was flooded when we went. Castle is very beautiful and surrounded by amazing views
