Great attraction

It's a nice walk up to this castle. Even though it was very wet the day that we visited the castle itself is gorgeous. Well worth a walk down to it, it's open and can be freely... read more

I know, I know. It rains in Ireland a LOT... BUT, the path to this castle could use another layer of gravel or something to help with the mud. Granted, it had been raining quite a bit the day before and the day that I visited, so maybe it's not always as bad as it was the day I was... More

Stunning views on the walk to and from the ruins - especially on a lovely day. We had lovely weather, but I imagine that this would be just as good on most days. The walk down and back allows plenty of photo opportunities and it's a treat to be able to explore the ruins freely. It was still a little... More

It's a nice walk up to this castle. Even though it was very wet the day that we visited the castle itself is gorgeous. Well worth a walk down to it, it's open and can be freely explored. If only the weather was better I would've spent a lot more time at the site. Definitely glad that I visited while... More

Unlike other reviews I came across, its not a long walk, certainly not 50 min..The path is slippy in places and very muddy at castle but all depends on weather..parking is limited but do park up and walk down and enjoy the scenery..Dont drive because if everyone did that it would cause chaos...We enjoyed it and we went on a... John D'Arcy built the town of Clifden and in 1815 built a castle for himself and his family. the castle was visited by Thackery who described it as a 'Fine Chateau'. He was of course describing it as a French castle. Although today the castle is a ruin, it was once a great (but not very big) house with fine... More

This is a beautiful location but I believe the road down to the castle may be on private land. Please do not drive down as recommended in a previous review, this could lead to blocking of the access. Just take the walk, it really is not that far. Enjoy

Great castle, route not marked. From Clifden on Sky Road, look for a stone wall and arch on the left. Go through arch, and walk down the gravel road until you get to the castle. It's worth the walk, but wear shoes that can get wet and muddy.

If you walk down to the castle it is a bit of a walk so if you are brave and its early take the risk and drive down. It is a beautiful castle and a great view The hand painted sign says "no cars" but no one knows who owns the road. It is not marked very well but easy... More

Interesting views and history. A narrow and rocky path up and down hills, also muddy in parts. Was a nice walk about a 50 min hike.

Be sure to wear the right shoes. You can't drive up to the castle. You have to park and then walk down to the castle. Beware the mud and slick rocks. Its all worth it once you get to the castle. It beautiful and best of all, free to tour.
