We loved our walking tour of Clifden on an overcast , occasionally drizzly, day in June .
My parents are from Clifden , so I have been many times. Despite that ,and what knowledge I thought I had acquired about the town , our expert guide Kathleen Villiers -Tuthill really filled us in on the history of the area. The walk was easy for me and my adult children and weaving our way up and down the back alleys and streets of Clifden was very enjoyable and felt a bit clandestine :)
I would highly recommend this tour for families and adults. Ms Villier- Tuthill has a vast knowledge having studied and written about Clifden and the surrounding area.
My only warning would be some areas are a bit tough to get to ( inclines, gravel, steps, etc ) for those with mobility or respiratory issues.

A most interesting, entertaining and informative tour of Clifden with local historian Kathleen Villiers-Tuthill. She wove a rich tapestry based on her writing and historical research of the town and presented it in a relaxed and engaging manner, accessible to all ages and a lovely way to spend 2 hours around the town. Thank you!

This is the SECOND time I have taken the historical walking tour with Kathleen and I know I'll probably be back a 3rd and 4th. I've been coming to Clifden my entire life and never knew the history of the town until this tour. Kathleen is a wonderful guide to this beautiful town, she is incredibly knowledgeable and patiently answers all questions. I've also purchased her books in the Clifden Bookshop which are excellent, thoroughly researched and very interesting. I highly recommend the tour for anyone interested in history, it will make you appreciate Clifden even more.

Decided to go on this tour as a family. My family is very familiar with the area but the tour was fascinating, informative and filled in historical gaps for us. The history of the prison, the famine, the old church, along with the connection Mexico, were just some of the highlights.
The guide was a very knowledge about Clifden and it was great way to spent two hours.

This is a great way to explore Clifden, especially those parts which tourists would seldom encounter. Whether or not you have a particular interest in history, you should enjoy this tour. Kathleen is an excellent guide and held the attention of our small group for the best part of two hours as we wandered the old lanes and byways. She is very knowledgeable about the history of the town from its foundation in the early 1800s onwards, and pointed out many places of interest along the way. At each place we tarried she had an interesting story to tell. She was happy to answer all our questions. Highly recommended and excellent value for just €10.

We (my husband , two very old friends and I) took this tour on Saturday 14th July . Arrived at Station House hotel to be met by Kathleen our very friendly guide. We were part of a group of ten from different parts of Ireland and farther afield . Kathleen was a very knowledgable and enthusiastic guide who took us on a walk of Clifton which lasted approximately 2 hours. We had been in Clifden many times but we saw parts of the town we had never seen before . It was very apparent by Kathleen’s delivery of the tour that not only was she well informed but that she loved the town she had grown up in. If you are in the area you should partake of the tour which is very informative but also very humorous .

Clifden is a most adorable town and Kathleen Villiers-Tuthill makes the history come alive. I was thrilled when I saw that she was leading these tours as I'd read her book "Patient Endurance" while researching my Connemara ancestors. She is an expert on the area and a local from Clifden who leads you around all of the nooks and crannies of the town.
I felt like the length of the tour (about 2 hours) was just perfect and it was nice to get a little walk in. Kathleen talks about the founding of Clifden, it's challenges during the famine times (when many died or emigrated like my family!), and interesting stories about Clifden during the Irish Rebellion and Civil War. Digging in to the history of Clifden helps to understand Ireland as a whole, where's she's been and where she is today.

How do you book it. Does it include transportation from Galway? How long and strenuous is the walking?
