If you ask anybody have they ever been to County Leitrim the normal reply is "I am sure I have, but i cannot remember when." they now have a reason to come to Leitrim to enjoy the Shannon Blueway from Drumshanbo on Lough Allen through Battlebridge (that's a great name with a story behind it), and down to Hartley Bridge. The scenery both on the canal and river sections is very beautiful. If you are in a boat you must remember that the Lock at Lough Allen works backwards and you drop from the canal into the lake.

family of 5 cycled through Leitrim village and up the blue way to Drumshanbo, had a dip in the lovely outdoor swimming pool, which is heated :) and back for around 16km total trip. Very well worth the journey, as the views are amazing and so peaceful.

My wife and I wanted to try canoeing but had not done it before so we arranged a guided tour with a company called Adventure Gently. Graham decided on a paddle along the canal because the wind was mainly behind us and this was a brilliant strategy. We covered about 6 k of canal surrounded by beautiful wild flowers and Graham taught us the correct way to paddle so that we could cover a reasonable distance and not be too tired. The Canadian canoes were very stable and dry which surprised us. If you are a novice paddler talk to adventure gently, we really had a great time and wI'll be back for more.

What can I say? I live along the Blueway & love walking the canal banks. Always meeting other walkers, cyclists, boaters & seeing more canoes these days. Great to see so many people getting to enjoy the outdoors & congratulations to Waterways Ireland for making this accessible.

Kayaked the Shannon Blueway - Camlin River Loop in August 2015 and it's an absolute gem. Excellent for beginners, like us, with good access and exit points when required. Make sure to be clear of the return route from Termonbarry to Richmond Harbour as an absence of Blueway signage can be confusing! Overall, though, a terrific day out.
