- ljmorfordWichita, Kansas34 contributionsWorth seeing, but I did not need a lot of time to see it all.Good, but I did not feel the need to spend a lot of time here. There is a tiny museum with a couple of rooms, but most of what there is to see is the fort itself. I didn't do a tour because the timing didn't work out, and that would probably have added quite a bit to my experience. There are not many interpretive signs, etc. so I mostly wandered around and admired the views out to the ocean and back to Kinsale. I walked there because I had not rented a car, and I'm not sure it was worth the effort to walk there. However, for someone who has rented a car and is able to take the tour, I could see that it is likely very worthwhile.Visited September 2022Written 10 December 2022
- Paul OCounty Monaghan, Ireland4,358 contributionsLarge costal for with nice viewsA very large and well preserved fort located just outside the town of Kinsale. It cost €5 to enter and there are some great views and takes about 30 mins or so to walk around and explore. There is limited signage around the fort and parking is not great. You effectively have to double park along the side of a road just outside the fortVisited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2023
- pfefmeisterSan Francisco, California2,971 contributionsWorth the WalkWe walked out to the fort from the harbor, a moderate walk on the way out if you take the high harbor road, and easy coming back on the lower harbor road. This is a well restored fort well worth the visit. Gorgeous views over the bay, nice exhibitions, and just a pleasant stroll through history. We had a perfect sunny day when we visited. It’s about an hour walk to get there. Nice.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 May 2023
- Alex FThe Villages, Florida1,468 contributionsThis evaluation from the outside only.Could not get in, it was no open yet, you think that a tourist attraction will open earlier. From the outside appears to be well maintained. The green areas around it a well maintained. The view to the town from here is spectacular.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 May 2023
- Heidi RNew York City, New York35 contributionsImportant Kinsale Highlight, Fantastic GuidesWe loved our visit to Charles Fort, and had a fantastic tour with a guide...and multiple interactions with the delightful staff. It's a large experience, and we loved the setting, learning about the history, and afterwards stuck around for a FANTASTIC meal of fish and chips at the Shirley's food truck outside. It was absolutely the perfect afternoon in the Kinsale area, and we'd say don't miss Charles Fort!Visited June 2023Written 24 June 2023
- tsic108 contributionsA must see in KinsaleA great place to visit. So much history and great views. You only need about an hour or so. Be sure to go into the exhibits and they have very cools items. Probably the best place we went to in KinsaleVisited June 2023Written 24 June 2023
- ronwynpGonubie, South Africa36 contributionsA special findWe didn’t go inside . Instead we walked round to the waters edge on the west side to get a full view of the fortification of the fort . Make sure you stop at Shirley’s fish at the front - fresh fish off the family trawler dailyVisited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2023
- ProctorParquetteManchester, New Hampshire99 contributionsUnexpected gem!We almost didn't do this tour and are thankful we did! I was surprised at how large and well-preserved this place is. There's a restored hall with excellent historical displays and you can walk around most of the grounds at will. Docents gave us just enough insight into things as we explored, that we didn't feel the absence of a formal tour. Beautiful location and an easy walk from Kinsale.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 July 2023

Deirdre gave a great tour, and we learned far more than we would have if we had just wandered around. The fort is well preserved for its age. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Kinsale area. It’s a nice walk up to the fort with some beautiful views of the harbor and back into Kinsale.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 August 2023

This is a must see if you're going to Kinsale, and worth going somewhat out of your way for if you are not.

This diet, built to protect the area from a Spanish or French invasion—and continuing as a military installation to modern times is well worth a visit

We visited the fort recently while on a tour. The lady from the fort who guided us was very good, she showed us around and explained the history of the place very well.
A very big stone fort built by the English between 1678 1682 on the order of Charles 11. It has magnificent views over the town and the harbour .
A national monument of Ireland since 1971.
A must place to visit.

This site was part of our My Ireland Tour. We had a private guide to talk to us about the history of the fort and port Kinsale. We enjoyed learning the history and exploring the site before traveling into town. Highly recommend for learning more about Ireland's history.

Views were amazing. Exhibitions ok. Toilets useable. No concession stand. Tour guide, well, should learn people aren't here to listen to him pontificate. Not a tour but a lecture with blinkers on.

Yes. Kinsale is definitely worth your time. You can walk to several historical sights so it is great for people who enjoy the outdoors. Take the Scilly walk from Kinsale to Fort Charles.
