Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The locals were awesome. They were friendly and shared their culture. My wife was even able to get them to sing a song. One of her favorite memories of our trip.

We have friends who live locally so have visited this pub several times when walking to James Fort. The location is the real draw, but the plus points stop there. The bar is dated & tired looking and the staff are far from welcoming. Also be advised that they do not take cards so be sure to remember cash!
It would be lovely if new management came along with some vision, but it remains to be a place for locals so don’t expect anything special.

Visited today very briefly as I was entertaining a family of French visitors and wanted to show them James Fort before dining. I needed to use a loo and as there are no public facilities at the dock, both ladies of the group popped our masked and fully vaccinated heads in through the door and asked permission.
The waitress declined and advised the toilets were for customers only. I replied immediately that this wasn’t an problem and I’d happily buy something as my need for the loo was pressing. I asked to buy a bag of crisps and her attitude was extremely snarky. She said ‘that’s not really the point!’ To which I replied ‘if I’ve bought an item, aren’t I a customer and entitled to use the toilet?’
Her body language and facial expression were very unpleasant and unwelcoming, but she declined to answer and stomped away from me.
I have no problem making a purchase to facilitate my use of use the facilities. If there is a minimum purchase requirement I suggest that you amend your sign to publicise this clearly.
I request that who ever trains your staff in customer service: please consider the fact that her attitude and actions ensured that when we had completed our very pleasant visit to James Fort, we drove elsewhere with our party of seven, to enjoy dinner, where we were served with respect and a welcoming attitude.

Was absolutely disgusted that the landlady refused to let my 76year old mother use the toilet. Thoroughly unpleasant lady and a very poor advertisement for Irish hospitality. We have travelled all over Ireland over the last five weeks and encountered nothing like her. I would have been happy to pay for drinks in order to allow my mum to use the toilet but the landlady was rude and obnoxious muttering “Jesus Christ” under her breath as we left.

Sadly we were staying at the Castle park Marina which is dirty and very expensive with very very poor facilities so we were stuck on this side of Kinsale harbour. The only pub on this side is The Dock Bar. We went in to get some food and a drink the man behind the bar was blatantly rude he could not have cared a less about serving English people he even commented about not understanding our strange accents! When we asked about food he just laughed and walked off to serve someone local. This place could be so good as it has a very nice view and with the right helpful staff and good food it could be a goldmine for its owners sadly it is what it is now a run down scruffy pub with rude and staff and no food. I hope never to return

Gorgeous little bar with place to sit outside. No food served which would be great , even if they did some toasties or scones etc.
Staff a little offhand, ordered ten plus drinks but had to go up and down to bar to get each despite no other customers the bar staff didn't offer to help bring the drinks to our table.
Could be such an amazing place if they did some food or a BBQ outside or even did a little shop for the summer guests staying nearby! Such a pity. Feels like there's no love for the place as it's being kept open for the sake of it.

After a hike up to James Fort, a cuppa or a pint of ale or cider is a refreshing way to end the adventure at The Dock. A country pub with no fuss, just go get your drinks, sit, chat and enjoy and probably get into some great conversations with others on the patio. For the really energetic walker, The Dock/James Fort and the local beach are an easy walk on the footpath and across the bridge from the town of Kinsale, even in the evenings when the road lamps light your walk home.
