No covid restrictions apply here

No covid cert checks, no social distancing, no wearing masks and no table service. Hot spot for covid spread. There is a token sign in book at the door but no one making sure it is filled in. 3 staff members trying to cope with customers 3-4 people deep at the bar. Can see why it is so popular with a younger demographic. It seems a nice pub when you look past the chaos of it

One of the world’s greatest pubs.

They know your name the second time to go in to The Lobster Pot (unofficial name of McDonnells because it used to double up as a funeral parlour - think about it?). Music in the evening. Always packed. But also the best pub for an early lunchtime pint and a read of the paper.

Best pub in Belmullet

Visit family in Mayo several times a year and one of first port of calls when back in the Wild West is McDonnells for a pint of the black stuff. The most hospitable barman/owner you’ll ever meet and they serve up a cracking pint of Guinness. They show all the Premier league games, rugby and GAA so a great spot for watching sport as well. A traditional Irish bar with an open turf fire giving it a cosy feel and trad music sessions at weekends. If you’re lucky Padraig, the owner, might give you a complimentary pint and pizza if you stay long enough :)

When you walk through the door of a local pub you never know what to expect. Here. The owner, Padraic, shakes your by the hand and buys you a drink. What an engaging, welcoming place. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Great Irish Pub! Good Craic!
Sep 2019
What a great time we had in McDonnell's. Padraig was the bartender in the afternoon and entertainment at night. They pour a proper pint and have everything you want from an Irish pub. The Craic was Mighty!

Best Pub in Ireland! The 3rd generation owner Padraic McDonnell is FANTASTIC!
Sep 2019
My wife and I along with our good friends were traveling the entire Country of Ireland in 2 weeks. The highlight of our visit was this Pub, and meeting the friendliest people who treated us like family! The reason we stopped in this lovely town was to find out family roots, My Great Great Grandfather's home was about 10 miles south of Belmullet, in Mt. Jubilee. We found the ruins of where he left his home after the famine in 1862 for the USA to NY, and down to Philadelphia. I wanted to share my story because Padraic assisted in attempting to find any existing relatives that may still be there. He went out of his way to ask all his contacts, and we are in the process of finding a distant relation somewhere in the USA. We spent 2 days in this lovely town and want to recommend this establishment to everyone. If you do not stop at this Pub you will be sorry! Just go and enjoy the welcoming spirit that flows freely. The Guinness and Smithwicks is amazing, along with a Black Bush Irish Wiskey! THANK YOU PADRAIC, we love you! Padraic also arranged for us to stay an additional night at a local hotel Broadhaven Bay Hotel, and also arranged our golf at Carne golf links, ask for Gerry Maguire, he was awesum too!

The Best of the Best

McDonnells Bar is the best bar in the best town of the best country. I first walked into McDonnells with my brother to have a beer while my wife was unpacking at our nearby hotel. The owner, Padraig Conroy was bartending and immediately started a friendly conversation. I told him our great grandparents were married in Belmullet in the 1870s and he knew families with our grandparents name. He made a phone call and told us to meet him the next day after Sunday mass. The next day he graciously took us to meet a possible distant cousin the next day. Padraig went out of his way to help us and we will always appreciate what he did. Needless to say we spent both of our nights in Belmullet at McDonnells Bar. There was live music both nights and the bar was packed both nights. The first night Padraig played the guitar and sang. He is an entertaining singer and is outstanding. The second night a family came in for a post baptismal party. The grandmother talked to my wife as if they were old friends and showed her the baby's pictures. Each night people danced, sang along with the music and drank into the night. Both nights we had the best time of any vacation. Padraig and the rest of the people of Belmullet took in three South Carolinian tourists as friends and showed us the best of times.
