I had the privilege of meeting Michael and Tony when I was in Dingle, early March 2024. They were in the process of converting the once music shop into an intimate concert space and graciously gave me a tour. The charm of the once fisherman’s lodging was palpable even through the dust of renovations. The amount of history contained within the decor was astounding and something Michael was more than happy to walk me through.
While I was too early to attend a concert, I will absolutely be a patron during my next trip to Dingle. Congratulations, lads, for embracing a new adventure and the rebirth of the shop.

We saw a concert last night with local musicians. It was wonderful. Lots of music to see in Dingle and while the music in the bars can be fun, this was beautiful music in a calm setting with everyone appreciating what they were experiencing. Highly recommend.

Just off the seafront this is the best music and coffee shop in Dingle (sit indoors or out). Ask Caitriona or Micheal for advice on trad CDs or instruments, and they will tell you when and where the best sessions and gigs are taking place locally. A must stop for anyone who wants the full Dingle experience. The coffeeshop run by Dara guarantees excellent coffee delivered with a smile. Highly recommended

Really enjoyed listening to the musicians and that is my reason for 5 star . The polite charming Joe who served us complimentary Irish coffee was delightful. The venue was slightly crowded and could have been more comfortably seated but we were told that this was due to the old man who runs the venue for the owner Dara. This old man needs a lesson in PC though as he made some sleazy remarks to my lady friend but I didn't want an altercation and politely ignored. This otherwise charming venue would be well served without this character. We are here to enjoy our holidays without being harassed .

Dear Philomena,
Thank you for your positive remarks about my brother Joe. Sadly I wasn't there on the night in question so can only apologise for any misunderstanding.
Should you plan a return visit I hope to meet you personally.

Dingle is a magical land, and Siopa Ceoil is a particularly extra special, magical little shop within it. Make sure you visit it before you leave! It made my trip, I’m so glad I serendipitously discovered it.
First off, it’s a wonderful shop in the traditional sense of the word. Rather than coming home laden with shamrock trinkets, I suggest stopping here to find a more meaningful souvenir, true to authentic Irish music — such a big, beautiful part of the culture there. Siopa Ceoil has a wonderful selection of gorgeous Irish instruments, big and small, for both experts and casual admirers alike. They also have an impressive collection of the best traditional Irish music CD’s, both local to Dingle and abroad.
Not to mention, they make a mean Irish coffee! The store is also a coffee shop, and overall the place has such a warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere that I found myself stopping by throughout my stay. A family run business, I met owner Michael Herlihy and his son Dara, who take great pride in their hospitality, authenticity, and customer satisfaction. They are the witty, genuine, generous kinds of Irish natives I loved meeting in my travels. I also met Catriona, who was also very polite and knowledgable. They were all a great help beyond the shop itself too; they told me the best places to find live trad music in Dingle and the best shows that were happening that night. It was obvious how involved in the Dingle music scene, beyond just their pleasant little shop’s walls. Later at these shows, I could see how all the local musician celeb’s are friends of Siopa Ceoil, and that speaks volumes to me.
And the best part of Siopa Ceoil is how it’s so much more than just a music shop. They have incredible concerts there, now four nights a week, up from three because of high demand. I was lucky enough to get to see the amazing Peter Staunton and Niamh Varian-Barry (Solas) perform there. It was a great show, with locals and American tourists alike packed inside. We all thoroughly enjoyed this intimate experience, complete with more than just the songs, but also full of personality and explanations and stories behind them. And owner Michael is a fantastic accordion player that also joined in; such an awesome time. And this was just one random night that I happened to find this gem of a place. They have world-class talent performing there all the time, including dancing.
This place was a completely random find for me, and I’m so glad it happened. The above are just some of the reasons Siopa Ceoil made my trip extra memorable and special. I can’t wait to go back!

We first visited here in August 2013, and had a chance to go back recently. Both times we viewed by pure luck a performance by the young Irish National Step Dance champion. Incredible. on both occasions, the musicians were excellent. You would never expect to find this in such understated space and location. It obviously has been tended with loving care by Michael and the family for years. And, there is Irish coffee (decaf) served as part of the price. If we are fortunate enough to go back to Dingle, this will remain a must visit.

I am a tour-guide with Rick Steves Tour Company who has been travelling to Dingle for over 10 years. The Dingle music shop is such a a treat for myself and for all my tour-members. The great welcome from Michael, Dara and Caitriona is much appreciated.
They also have an excellent collection of music and instruments for sale and most importantly - they can play and sing, and have a genuine affection for Irish Music, one of our most important cultural assets.
I regard this attraction as a 'must-see' in Dingle. Stop by and say hello!

I've been to Dingle several times, and Siopa Ceoil is always a must-stop for us. This most recent visit was no exception. I've enjoyed chat and tunes with Michael Herlihy in the past. This time Michael was away, but his son Dara Herlihy took excellent care of us. I host a Celtic music radio show in the US and believe myself to be reasonably knowledgeable about Irish music, but Dara is an absolute expert, in addition to being a great guy. I consider Dara to be an invaluable resource, especially when it comes to local music. He made a number of recommendations, not only for music but also places to visit on this trip AND when to go, and he was spot-on with every one. To top it off, he was quick to provide a cup of excellent coffee as well. The shop is very well stocked, not just with Irish music but also tunebooks and method manuals as well. Over my four visits to the store, I've probably spent about 400 euros, and everything I bought has been a winner. The topper this time was the bodhran I bought on Dara's recommendation.
I can't say this strongly enough. Siopa Ceoil is a must-visit when you're in Dingle. Take your time and browse everything that's there - music, books, instruments, videos -- and if you're unclear, ask Dara for a recommendation. You won't go wrong.

I'm sure at one point in the past, Dingle was a gem of an undiscovered town, which is why Rick Steves loved it so much. Unfortunately, much of the town now feels "programmed" for the tourists, to meet the agendas of tour buses and people faithfully following their guidebooks. The Dingle Music Shop feels like one of these places, like it's all being put on just for the tourists. That's not my complaint particularly with the Dingle Music Shop, as we encountered this inauthenticity in various places throughout the town. My complaint is that I excitedly went into the music shop, situated right on the waterfront to catch all of us unsuspecting tourists, bought my traditional music CD, only to walk up the hill and see it for half the price at the other little music shop in town, the Record Shop I believe it was called. Clearly the bigger waterfront locale means higher rents, etc., but it still leaves a bad taste in the mouth and the feeling that you're being taken advantage of.

I have made several attempts to reply to your comments however my responses never seem to meet tripadvisor guidelines so here we go again!
I'd like to start by agreeing with you when you say Dingle was at one point an undiscovered gem however when a town experiences an enormous level of tourism of course there is going to be compromise and I believe most people understand this. (Even Rick Steve's!)
Our store is just over a year old and we have gone to great lengths and expense to recreate what we believe this building was in 1840 and though you say we put on a show for the tourists there are in my experience very few shops in the world where one will receive a genuine warm welcome, where the owners will sing a song with you, play live music (at no cost) and advise you on what is the best traditional music available so we are sorry if this feels "'inauthentic'' to you.
With respect to being more expensive than the other record store which is an 8th of the size of ours you are correct in assuming we have higher rents as well as rates, staff costs and generally far higher over heads not to mention the massive amount of money we invested in this unit in the height of a recession. I understand that on certain items we are 2-3euro more expensive however i find half price a huge exaggeration!
With regards Rick Steve's I have found all of his user's to highly enjoy and recommend Dingle after there trip so I should hope they are not all wrong.
Never the less I am sorry you have such a negative view of our wonderful community and hope to welcome you back in the future.
Warm regards,
Dara, Catriona and Michael
