All done in 15 mins
Nov 2019 • Couples
Wasn't quite sure what to expect from this visit. We drove for 45 mins and it took 15 mins to walk around the building. Just be aware of that if you are coming any distance.
It's a wonderfully preserved gatehouse with info boards strategically placed. It's not staffed so you just look around at your own pace. The spiral staircase is steep and narrow and is therefore no good for people with mobility issues. Quite a haunting place that evokes the sense of days gone by.

This is free. Not a great deal to see but if your into history and in the area worth a quick visit. The nearby parish church is better

Nice free local attraction
Aug 2019 • Family
Well worth walking down to. It’s free and more intact than some places which charge to get in. It’s small and doesn’t take long. We visited as part of a longer walk.

Fascinating little ruin
Jun 2019 • Couples
We were surprised how interesting this place was, bearing in mind that, from the outside it is just a small ruin. There is free entry and we were able to access all the upper rooms. Well worth the effort of finding it.

Interesting place
Jun 2019 • Couples
It's one of those places you wouldn't know about.
It's well kept, it's free, takes less than 15 mins to see it all.
Interesting information about the history of the gate house.
If you visiting wetheral well with the short walk from the green.

Surprisingly complete
May 2019 • Couples
Wetheral is picturesque and steeped in history; even older than the gate house is the Church, which houses a Joseph Nollekens sculpture and dates back to at least the 11th Century. A sandstone outcrop, above the river, houses the St Constantine (who may be fictitious) caves. The gatehouse is a small area, is surprisingly complete and can be quickly seen as part of a walk to the south of the village.

15th Century Gatehouse but nothing else
Apr 2019 • Friends
Only the Gate House remains standing. It dates from the 15th century and is worth a look around if you are in the area. It is a small site so won't take long and there are some information boards explaining the history. It's maintained by English Heritage but is free to enter when open. It's on a narrow road and there's no parking but it's only a few minutes' walk from the village.

Not much to see
Nov 2018 • Family
If you’re in wetheral then it’s worth walking round to see the gatehouse but don’t expect too much as there’s not a lot to see.

Hard to find
May 2018 • Solo
It's a bit off the beaten track and hard to find, the sat nav takes you somewhere else, but it is worth the effort if you enjoy local history. The gatehouse, as the name implies, once stood before a great priory. The priory's long since vanished, but the gatehouse is interesting.
