Sitting next to its opulent replacement, you may be tempted to just walk past this ruin and not give it a second glance. However, I always think that a ruined historical building gives you the chance to let your imagination run wild so spend some time exploring it and you won't be disappointed. Thanks to some good restoration work, you... More

Didn't know what to expect. Had a very active grandson with us. Loved the interactive exhibits wooden statues that were dotted around the entrance. The blacksmith was great Lol we all jumped back as not expecting to see a figure there. The old Hall is amazing. We did climb to the top, wow what a view. To see such marvellous... More

We chose to go to the Old Hall first this is more than a derelict house. It is next to its newer neighbour. Care is needed on the Stairs but the views are worth it.

Visited many times as live local. To get anything out of the experience the ear piece which you can get at the shop is a must. Brought it all to life for me helps if you are national trust or English heratage as free to get in worth it because to me a bit pricey to get in.

If you visit the Old Hall be sure to get the £1 audio guide as it makes the ruined building 'come alive' . I saw people walking round without it giving everything a cursory look but there is so much more to this place than meets the eye. What a story!

An English Heritage site, a very interesting place. There is still some of the original plasterwork in place. You will need a good imagination to visualise how the hall would have looked. It was built in the late 1500's by Bess of Hardwick who was a friend of Elizabeth 1. Her family were one of the wealthiest in the country.... More

We really enjoyed our walk of the ruins. We probably wouldn't go to see just the old hall but being NT members we gave it a go & we weren't disappointed. It's very interesting to learn the back story to the new hall. Lots of uneven ground & stairs make it unsuitable for some people, but if you are able... More

It is just a shell of the building that use to be there not much to no roof and no floors, you have to imagine what it use to look like.
