On Easter Monday 1847, the gates were opened to the very first publicly funded park in the world. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton - Birkenhead Park was created to be the People's Garden - a place where the lowliest peasant to the British Monarch could stand together to enjoy a piece of the countryside in the middle of the city. In 1850, Fredrick Law Olmstead visited the park and with its inspiration, then went on to design and create what is arguably the most famous public park in the world - Central Park New York. In 2004 Birkenhead Park underwent an £11.8million restoration return it to its former glory. Today, Birkenhead Park is a Grade I listed landscape and carries the prestigious Green Heritage Award. It caters for all visitors with a number of sports such as Football, Cricket, Bowls, Angling and cycling, as well a visitors centre and access to some of the original structures around the park.

Lovely park, although the weather was very cold and foggy! I took some great photos, very atmospheric, the trees were beautiful, and loads of different species. Great place for a walk, good paths, good for pushchair and wheelchairs. To finish the walk we found the cafe, nice and clean, had a great bacon bap, and admired the view

A park which is full of interesting things to see and do. A children's park for the little ones and even fitness equipment around the park for the adults. The cafe is good too. The only shame is the people who allow their dogs to foul all over the park. This ruins it for everyone who has to dodge it... More

Been to this park many times but never wrote a review, This is the park of my childhood, adolescent and middle age years and it probably gets better with age. For the little ones there's a fantastic playground great for not so little too. There are huge fields all around the park for a run around or game of football... More

This was a nice autumn walk around the lake. There was hardly any litter and is well kept. Lots squirrels, ducks and wildlife. Pity about selfish dog owners letting their dogs run around when it clearly states they should be on leads not annoying wildlife and other people!! Even worse are the totally stupid ones that don't pick up their dogs... More

I admit that this review will be biased because I have lived near this park for 50 years(I'm 55 years old now !) The Autumn colours on the trees are fantastic right now with the reds, yellows and oranges particularly standing out. There is always something to see here- whether it's a sporting fixture(football and bowls at the moment)the woodpeckers... More

The refurbished boat house, chinese bridge and other attractions around the lake bring the park back to a real delight to visit. There are exercise stations along the paths so if your are in an energetic frameof mind you can exercise while enjoying the scenery or take some bread and feed the ducks and geese. Two cricket pavillions and you... More

Great place to visit if in Birkenhead. I enjoyed the beautiful autumn colours and fitness trail as I took a pre breakfast jog to blow out the cobwebs. Would like to return in summer for a gentle stroll. Beautiful.

A popular place to walk the dog, lots of paths meandering through the 2 parks. Play area for the kids and a lovely cafe for refreshments.
