It's free.

It's free. A small bit of castle. Quite a few steps.
Speaking signs were not working when we were there.
It's situated at Nott Square.

An interesting site which deserves more attention
Jul 2021
The castle remains can't compete with those of the big Welsh castles, but they're worth a look. However one side is obscured by the County Hall. And the view of an impressive gatehouse on the other is spoilt by a cafe's parasols.
However a walk round parts of the castle walls is possible, and it's easy to see why this was such an important defensive site. The castle was captured and recaptured many times since its initial construction in the 12th Century, the last time during the civil war in 1644.
Some audio presentations have been installed to try and give a flavour of life in the castle during its heydays. They are supposed to work by turning handles, however when we were there they were all out of action.

Nice spot for lunch
Jun 2021
We were in the town centre for lunch and came across Carmarthen Castle. There isn't much left of the castle but it's still a nice spot for a couple of pictures and a good location for an alfresco lunch.

worth a flying visit

I'm not typically one for historic ruins and castles but its Carmarthen castle is worth whiling away 15 minutes or so considering it's free. Some parts of the castle have been fairly well preserved and it offers semi decent views out over the River Towy.

Its right in the moddle of town so fine to see if you're walking by.
It isn't clear if it's going to open again or when.

Town location
Aug 2020
This castle is located in the centre of Carmarthen town. Great views. Disappointing as the castle has a large car park built right next to the walled entrance and the town shops on the other side of this entrance! Mainly a large wall with a arched entrance.

Not much to see and view was a bit disappointing of the car showroom on the opposite side of the estuary. But it is free!

Free entry. Middle of 'old' town.
Sep 2019
A great half hour spent in the very middle of original Carmarthen, and only 2 minutes from the "SHOPS!!"
Lot's of information!, both readable (both!!! languages!), or on speaker.

Amazingly, it's a through-route from Carmarthen County Hall ((The old jail) Spectacular in itself !), so you get all these business suited people making a Bee line through what is a Heritage Site.

Not one of them had a 'go' at us for getting in their way

It really is a different pace of life!

Disappointed
Sep 2019
Ok so it’s free but then if you had paid money you would have wanted a refund. We may have visited on the wrong day Saturday in September but the visitors centre and gift shop were closed . There is basically just one outside wall and part of one inside wall remaining. There are a few notice boards dotted around telling you some history of local people which were quite interesting and some stocks for a photo opportunity but would not go out of my way to visit again.
