Tunnel through time to the world of the Romans - with a visit to Welwyn...

Tunnel through time to the world of the Romans - with a visit to Welwyn Roman Baths. You can't take a hot bath any more - the boiler went out about 1,800 years ago when the Romans left! But you can see some fascinating remains which have survived from their time. Learn about how the Romans liked to relax with an elegant culture of bathing, and admire their creativity and style. The bath house remains are a scheduled ancient monument and were once part of a fine villa. The layout of the cold, warm and hot rooms and the heating system are remarkably well preserved. The baths are ingeniously preserved in a steel vault under the A1(M) motorway. You can find out how this vault was built. Also on display are archaeological finds from the Welwyn area and an exhibition devoted to the history of the site, which was uncovered during the 1960s and 70s by the Welwyn Archaeological Society. Welwyn Roman Baths are open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays and 7 Days a week during Hertfordshire School Holidays 2-5pm PLEASE NOTE WE ARE CLOSED THROUGHOUT DECEMBER.

This is by and far away one of the best exhibits I have ever been to. Whilst being small, they have made the most of the space they have and really made the place and time come alive. There is something for all ages. We played the roman game with the stones. I was fascinated by the herb information. The... More

Tucked away under the A1(M) you'll find this little gem. I have driven past so many times and it's only taken me over 30 years to finally get there. It's worth visiting if you are local or passing by. I wouldn't suggest it as a day out unless incorporating with other activities. It is very interesting and well presented, we... More

Really pleased we visited this museum. Quite unusual that it is under the A1 motorway! Friendly and knowledgeable staff and reasonably priced.

It's small yet interesting to see how people used to live. Things for children to do. Just interesting and glad I went even if it was short.

Great site "hidden" beneath the A1(M). Well presented and full of interesting information. Plenty of stuff for the children to investigate and keep their interest. Free entry for under 16's so great value. Very pleasant people on site. Good parking and toilets on site

Thank Simon B
