Rate piece of history

The chained library is open only to short tours with a guide.
Very rare piece of history - both in the building and in the books - that was well explained.
For just a few Euros - for church and library this is definitely worth a visit

A step back in time!
Sep 2019
If you are at all interested in historic libraries, this is a place you must go! First of all, you will enjoy the wonderful architecture in Zutphen as you are making your way to the St. Walburgis Church. Once there, you must purchase a ticket for the library which also entitles you to a lovely tour of the church. My tour group was small - three women passionate about books and history - and the tour guide shared our enthusiasm. Once inside the library area, she really brought the story to life - one interesting fact was that it wasn’t quiet in there because people were proud that they could read, so they would read out loud to demonstrate their prowess. I felt very emotional upon thinking how hard it would be to want to know more about the world, literature, the arts and yet have so few opportunities to acquire this knowledge. This was truly a memorable experience for me.

A fascinating must-see while in Zutphen
Aug 2019
We were lucky to join a tour in which the guide spoke English (she also continued in Dutch for the other person on the tour) to see the chained library. No photographs or touching is allowed, so it's nice that they have a chained facsimile of the Copernicus book outside the library that can be touched. The tour is perhaps 20 minutes in the library, and you may spend another hour or more in the adjacent church.

The library where you can't check out books
Jul 2019
Without using a time machine you can step back centuries into a room where the public were allowed to read books (which were rare and expensive in those days). The ancient heavy tomes are chained to the reading lecterns, almost like dangerous magic books might be at Hogwarts. Visits are with a guide who gives a knowledgeable insight into it's history and use.

Fascinating and fabulous guide

Absolutely worth seeing. It is neither big nor showy bout doesn't need to be. The chained books and the lecterns they are attached to speak for themselves. You cannot just go in you have to go with a guide in order to protect the books. I was lucky enough to be the only person on the 3pm tour on 19/7/19 and my guide was brilliant. Her English was excellent and her enthusiasm and knowledge impressive. Make sure you ask to see the library though, we had visited the church the day before and weren't told how to see it so had to go again. Disappointingly for my partner it is not wheelchair accessible due to 3 steep steps.

Interesting tour of church and library
Jun 2019
We are not huge history buffs but found the tour of the church library fascinating. The guide spoke excellent English and was very informative. We bought a combined ticket for the church and the library (6 euros pp). The church was toured with an audioguide. It took around 25-30 minutes and the recording was clear and concise. Perhaps some more information on the famous organ would have been good. There are occasional concerts on the organ ..details can be accessed on the church website.

worth seeing

The first public library.
You have to visit it with ad guide, because the books are that delicate that you cannot touch them. It is indeed necessary to visit with a guide, so that you get to history of the Librije.

Fascinating
Jul 2018 • Couples
We are a middle aged couple and both have a background in studying history. We found this was well worth a 4 Euro payment. The library is excellently preserved and the tour is informative. The interest is in learning about the history rather than in being able to touch and handle the books - which you are not able to do for obvious reasons. I wouldn't recommend it to family groups or those without an interest in history - this is an interesting and informative experience not a tourist gimmick.

If libraries are your thing ....
May 2018 • Couples
This is one of the handful of chained-book libraries left in the world, while th church itself is now run by a foundation and staffed by volunteers. As such, two euros entry fee plus two more for a guided tour of the library is a steal; the tour of the library stretched our Dutch but was very complete and we supplemented it with the good English language pamphlet and a little Googling before we went. For anyone interested in books it is quite unique - a quiet, contemplative room filled with incredible ancient tomes, all in great condition and seemingly awaiting the next group of monkish students to take their seats. We loved it.
