Great museum!

Visited the museum today. A real treasure trove, could easily spend an hour looking through the impressive displays. There was also a military vehicle display on outside which added to the atmosphere. Well worth a visit!

Went to the museum not expecting much but ohh I was wrong. I was greeted by a gentleman who have an extremely friendly demenier (Mr. Maguire). Started to have a look around at the items on display and Mr. Maguire came over again and we were chatting and he started to talk about the displays, e.g. carlow castle and the uniforms and the people of different time. I must say I could have lisented to him all day. He had a great enthusiasm and passion for history and for the museum. He knew every piece in there inside and out. The place it's self has a bit of everything in it from a ww1 trench to uniforms from America to 1916 memorabilia. To be honest I think the best items there are the people that look after them and know each and every story of every object. What an amazing place and some well hidden stories. 100% recommend.

This is right in the centre of Carlow town on side street. It tells us about various employers in the town "sugar factory" also the "boot factor" as well the history of the cathedral which is next to it. It also some recent findings in the area as well.
There is no parking outside the building but two car parks near by so not problem. You can also go to local tourist office which you pass through to go into the museum.

A little gem of a museum housed in a former Church tucked away on the grounds of St. Dympna's the Old 'Mental Hospital' as it was locally known for many years. The collection itself is a fascinating and diverse walk through Carlow involvement and connections with major military episodes since the late 18th century in particular. A sursprisingly large array of uniforms and memorabila grace this collection, including information and artefacts such as the story of Capt. Miles Keogh of Leighlinbridge in Carlow, who fought with Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1865. Capt. Keogh's horse, Commanche was the only thing left alive on the Union side after this famous battle. All told a great visit staffed by some very dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers.

Worth a visit if you are in Carlow on a Sunday
Oct 2015 • Couples
I'm a military museum junkie. We lucked out being in Carlow on a Sunday so built our schedule around visiting the museum about 2pm. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and there's a great collection of artifacts.

I think the museum needs better curation and better storytelling. It felt too cluttered to us, and some of the exhibits were hard to understand. A narrative coupled with the displays could really bring the visitor into the fascinating stories that are there.

Step back in military times.

An interesting journey through items of Carlow military interest. I was very impressed by the display of Myles Keoghs uniform. Myles fell at the battle of the Little Bighorn fighting in the Indian wars, having survived over military actions during his career.
