Old city entrance

This old fortification, was being used as the main entrance of the city. Interesting architecture, nice historical point.

The tower is located on the other side of pedestrian area while walking through the old town from the Cathedral. It is very well preserved and it has the tower clock working. Eventhough it is not that old as the Cathedral, you may just stop by and get the idea of the medieval fortification. Lean on the wall in the... More

One of the old gates to the town, this is a reminder of how life was like in these old walled villages. There is a 1€ fee to climb to the top. On a couple floors there are displays which are interesting. At the top, you can walk all the way around and get great views of the entire city.

there was a beer fest (August) when i was visiting this place, and tables were arranged under this clock tower, and a stage not far from here.

We were visiting Speyer and had to drop by the Clock Tower. As you walk along the Speyer's beautiful streets you start to see this imposing structure from a fair distance. But once you are under it, it's hard to fathom how this was built soooo many years ago to such precision. We walked under the Tower and turned back... More

I know that medieval city gates had the functions of maintaining your city as a secure space, and providing a point where you can relieve travelling sales people of a charge, or a tax for entering the city to trade. But Speyer's gate was clearly also meant to impress. It is a statement, even today, of the city's worth and... More

Beautiful view. Take your time and walk the stairs all the way to the top of this old city-entrance.

There is little doubt that the Old Gate would be the one of the first significant structure a traveler would feast his eyes upon when he arrives from the direction of the train station. One of the interesting thing about Speyer's Old Gate is the tower clock on the east and west face. Instead of 1 clock, each face accommodates... More

55Meters tall and 154 steps if you want to climb to the top, the Altport dominates the far end of the first section of Maximilian Strasse from the Cathedral. Worth the climb for the views and then you can enjoy a coffee in one of the many pleasant pavement cafes in front of the Gate.
