The casle is a nice stop if you are in the area. The views from the terras of the castle are fabulous. The museum itself is not to big.

Interesting worth a visit
Aug 2020
The Castle is worth a visit as the views are amazing. The museum is small but worth a visit to learn a bit more about the history of the castle and surrounding area

Beautiful panoramic view of Eder lake
Jul 2020 • Family
Amazing location with breathtaking view! No need to climb the uphill of the rock which rises 120 meters above the lake, as there are some parking spaces all the way uphill with a funny rate of 1 euro for the two hours.

The castle has a rich history; many unconfirmed legends circulate around its foundation. According to legend, the castle was founded by a certain knight who received the name Waldeck and named his residence in the same way. He wandered for a long time through the uncomfortable surroundings in search of a place where it would be possible to build a castle, and a peasant pointed out to him a suitable place on a hill in the middle of the forest. The very name "Waldeck" literally means "forest corner".
Due to a later arrival the museum was closed so the only exhibit which impressed was the well where prisoners were once held on chains and the open to ones eyes - the view of the lake!

Rated low because of my personal experience, but probably not normal

When I arrived a security guard stopped me from entering the courtyard - there was a Ferrari event taking place there, so this meant the only way in was through the hotel. I went in to the hotel and got permission to go to the view point - following directions I got completely lost. Finally I found the door that took me to the viewpoint - through the courtyard and the middle of the Ferrari event. The museum was closed (although the signs had said it was supposed to be open for another hour). I saw the view and returned, only to find the door I came in could only be opened from the other side, so I waited till somebody else came. I was left with the impression that the place does not encourage tourism (although it is a stunning castle).

A Great German Castle!
Apr 2018 • Family
There were so many things we enjoyed about our time here. It was by far our favourite castle in the area.

It wins hands down on several points. When we visited, there was the most delicious food available from the welcoming staff at the Grill Hut. The views from the castle over the lakes are to die for - especially on a sunny day, as it was when we visited.

So, currywurst and chips downed, we entered the museum! You can have an audio tour which was essential and a rare thing on our castle tour of Hesse. It's a great castle - especially if you like medieval torture methods. The staff here were lovely and very kind to our children.

Make sure you see what's at the bottom of the well!

Castle and restaurant Altane
Sep 2017 • Couples
Food was good, not really big portions, and quite expensive, the castle it self is ok, quite nice to look around on the outside, they have a small museum too, which costs €5

wonderful views, well worth the short hike
Jul 2017 • Couples
Getting tot he castle entails a short hike from the parking lot, but it is worth it. the views over the lake are magnificent, even on a cloudy day. there is a restaurant open for lunch or you can get a snack at the small stand in the courtyard.

Great views across to Edersee dam.......
Aug 2016 • Family
I really wanted to see 1 of the Dams that was blown up by the Dambusters, but first have a look at the castle on top of the hill.....found the car park which was free to park in and a small walk up hill to castle, looked very impressivewhen you enter the courtyard, to your right there the typical German gaurd hut (check my photos), a hotel and restuarant entrance in courtyard also small huts with benches in with a counter to purchase food and drink then sit in your hut.......walk throught he arch where you will see the views across Edersee, gun placements, a building did stand here at 1 time, then enter the little shop selling some items which is the entrance to museam, ok the museam not much to see really, you do get a guide radio and in English they do other languages walk through the torture items down steps in the old holding cell, not much to see but hey im on holiday might as well see whats there came along way.........

The castle...you dont really see much inside as it a home....a hotel...restaurant and a small museam, soi dont expect it to be like the English castles where you can explore of it and due to lack of seeing more of the inside it lost a mark, but still worth going for a look even just for the view across Edersee.....after pop down to the Dam.....

Very interesting but not four stars
Jul 2016 • Family
So let me start by saying the hotel is beautiful and the people very friendly and we had a great time. However, I'm not sure what scale they were rated a four star because they are a middle three star at best. No A/C, water doesn't stay a consistent temp, cheap fans when asked for, and worst of all very poor quality bed sheets. Well, actually just the bottom sheet so we slept on the comforters. The restaurant is exceptional though expensive. Views are unbeatable. We have two daughters with us (16 & 22) and they enjoyed it as well. Breakfast buffet is okay, not able to order eggs the way one wants. Not enough variety.

Lovely views of the Edersee and countryside
Apr 2016 • Couples
Like many of the German Schloss we have visited, Schloss Waldeck has been converted into a hotel and cafe/restaurant. The exterior parts are free though and the view from the terrace down to the Edersee is particularly nice. There are plenty of informational plaques around to provide you with a history of the place, a couple of cannons positioned to 'fire' over the Edersee itself and a pleasant cafe/restaurant to have a meal or buy a cup of coffee to go (mitnehman). We didn't go to the museum, so unable to comment on this attraction.
