I have visited this beautiful amphitheatre and taken many friends to it as well. It always give me the feeling that I can feel the period when this region was under the domination of the Romans. It is a must visit site.

One of the oldest & largest amphitheaters in France. We enjoyed learning the history of this place and going into the churches & crypts in Saintes.

A couple of times over the years we've set out walking from the middle of Saintes to find the Amphitheatre. We've started off ok, following brown tourist signs clearly marked Amphitheatre. Each time we run out of signs before reaching the Amphitheatre. Whether that's us taking a wrong turn or bad signage I'm not sure. This time though (a dry... More

This was a great find. Good parking. Very well restored and maintained attraction. It's worthwhile to pay the few Euros for the audio guide.

as you could just look in from outside, why go in? To walk around. To imagine yourself inside about to be forced to fight. The place is big and to fill the place the local population must have been huge. Nice little cafe.

Was told this was a "don't miss" place to see. The scenic walk from the centre of town was fine but, because we had seen the Colliseum in Rome and other amphitheatres in better condition we were a tad disappointed. However, it's still worth a visit and I would recommend having a coffee on the terrace above the ruins

This visit was well worth the long walk. The information board (in English) provided gave a very good insight into the happening in the arena.

Saintes is a quiet French town, competing with many around it for visitors. The highlight of the town is the Amphittheatre. It is a far size, and one can imagine how much it would be if the stone had not been plundered over the years. Cheap entry and well worth a walk up the hill to visit.

Loved this place, you can just imagine what it was like in Roman times with 15000 people watching the fights etc. Cheap entry, only 3 euros and free parking. We asked if it was alright to leave the car there after the visit to walk into town and see some of the other sites and they said it was no... More
