- liverpool1023London, United Kingdom1,256 contributionsIncredibly well organisedWe visited from Rennes taking a direct bus trip (Keolis) from the central station taking one hour to arrive at the very MSM modern tourist centre. It is a 35 minutes walk from the tourist hub along a bridge-like causeway to reach the Mount itself. The alternative is to take the very regular shuttle buses, that apparently run 24 hrs per day. If you wish to visit the Abbey, I would recommend advanced booking. Ticket prices are very reasonable (Euro 11) and we took around an hour to do the tour. It is impressive to say the least - a vertically stacked multi-storey monastery with fantastic views across the bay.A huge thanks for your words. - Regina PHannover, Germany3,569 contributionsWonders of architectureThe abbey was built over several decades in several architectural styles. Due to the limited space, parts of the building were built on top of each other in several floors. This led to problems with the statics, so that parts of the building collapsed from time to time. The abbey was not spared from a fire either. However, it withstood several attempts to conquer it. An absolute must. There is an entrance fee to visit, the audio guide costs extra, but is highly recommended. Toilets are free, but full. Make sure to buy tickets in advance. - Sergiy MDublin, Ireland1,990 contributionsMagnifiqueOn the small isle or it looks more like a rock in the sea is a small village with streets, restaurants, shops, small hotels etc. The Abbey is on the very top of the rock. All of this is protected by walls built by human beings and by nature. The village can be visited free of charge, but to get to the Abbey entry ticket needed as well as photo ID. Parking is located couple miles from Le Mont-Saint-Michel and it is free just half an hour. The free bus is in service from the parking. Abbey is the last stop. Written 4 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 March 2024

I stayed at Relais Saint-Michel, the closest hotel to Mont Saint-Michel. It was a trip where I was able to enjoy both the night and morning views of Mont Saint-Michel. I recommend Hotel Relais Saint-Michel to anyone going to Mont Saint-Michel. - bob mNantes, France60 contributionsTwo magnificent, idyllic days!Great Pentecost weekend! 1st day : Arriving at the hotel at 4 p.m., we had an aperitif, then parked in the parking lot around 7-7:30 p.m. The weather was magnificent, bright sunshine, 22°C, and high tides coef 110! After a few photos on the footbridge, we went up to the ramparts, there weren't many people there! Great ! We had a picnic in the “gardens”. High tide at 9 p.m., sunset at 9:30 p.m.! Only downside: Impossible to get ice cream, the shops were closed, and the restaurants were armored... 2nd day : We left quite early, I hoped to be up at the abbey by 9am, but we finally arrived at the bottom of the ramparts by 9am. We took the main street, there were few people, (I managed to take 2 street photos without any tourists! We took a guided tour of the marvel (booked for a month), the view from the top was magnificent , but we had to wait a bit because this visit was at 10:30 a.m.... and we saw the tourist crowds constantly increasing. At 11:15 a.m., as we left the abbey, it was crazy, there was HUGE amounts of people. crowded (see photo). After a picnic, we took a tour of the bay: so cool, quiet, phew... ***** Conclusion: you absolutely have to arrive very early or very late at the mountain! You absolutely must take a tour of the bay! 20€ parking (free after 6 p.m.), the shuttle service is efficient even in busy periods (in our case)Bonjour, et merci d'avoir pris le temps de nous écrire. - Phil WChapel Hill, North Carolina567 contributionsI wondered how the experience would be...I had wondered/worried how the Abbey experience would be, but my concerns were overcome completely. Crowding had been my biggest worry. Access to the island was remarkably eased by the site's processes and transportation out to near the island, even though it was a Sunday at 2pm on a holiday weekend (supposedly the worst case). Once on the island, we averted the village crowd by climbing the 185-step shortcut (more steps to come; my iPhone measured 26 flights worth of steps that day!). The shortcut is just past the Tourism Bureau on the left, about 35m from the drawbridge entrance. The audioguide was excellent, my appreciation for the construction / importance / history was enhanced, and the interior and exterior views were remarkable throughout.A huge thank for your very pleasant feedback experience, regarding your visit of the Mont-Saint-Michel and its Abbey.Written 27 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 May 2024

- CallPatWiesbaden, Germany8,969 contributionsQuite a long way...On this very day, the Olympic torch is being carried through Mont-Saint-Michel. This means a high level of security and lots of stands to get young people excited about sport. Parking costs €17 for a few hours. The walk to the monastery hill is quite long. In total, you walk around 8km including the tour of the monastery and a few steps up and down. Fortunately, dogs are allowed except inside the monastery. In between, we eat lousy paninis in the first snack bar we find on the island. It's loud, crowded and totally dirty. You can go into the monastery for €13. It's worth it! The great jewel of Normandy and the most visited place in France.
I visited at dusk on a stormy day and was completely alone in the small town I had been wanting to visit for years.
It rained buckets, but it was still magical.
Declared a World Heritage Site in 1979, legend has it that it was the Archangel Saint Michael who indicated, through a dream, where the Abbey should be built.
Now he is the protector of the city, being able to buy coins with his sphinx as well as all kinds of sculptures.
It is beautiful and exciting, even when you see the silhouette of the mountain in the distance it makes your hair stand on end.
There is a parking area from which free buses take you to the entrance of the fortress. They will charge you about 20 euros for about four hours, which is more or less how long it takes you to visit the entire city.
Go first thing in the morning so that there are few tourists or in the late afternoon if you have two days, to leave the visit to the Abbey only for the morning. Be prepared for a lot of steps and a lot of people.
The path can be reached or returned on foot in a 30-minute walk or by shuttle bus.
Inside it is all narrow streets with medieval houses and fortifications that go up to the Abbey, which is a must-see.
The views from above are impressive, as the river estuary is very extensive.
At low tide you can walk along the beach, but be careful, the sand is quite muddy.
Within the walls there are countless souvenir shops, restaurants and shops where you can buy the typical cookies of the area.
Beautiful place that takes you to another century.

The Abbey is a super interesting place and has to be part of the visit to Mont.
It is possible to buy a ticket in advance for the visit at the tourism center located at the beginning of the main path, whose entrance is to the right of the visitor facing Mont.
Opening time is 9:30 am and it is worth arriving early for the visit (possible if you stay overnight or if you are taking private transport), as the first train only arrives from Paris at 12 pm...
There is the option of an audio guide in several languages (including Brazilian Portuguese), but there are guided tours in English and French.
I was unable to participate in the guided tour in English because I was exhausted.
The leaflet is very explanatory and can replace the audio guide, but I paid 3 euros for the audio guide and liked it.
One curious thing is that you can only buy the audio guide at the Abbey, so even if you have purchased the ticket for the visit in advance, you will have to get in the same queue as the ticket to buy the guide.
There are bathrooms on site and also a source of drinking water, there are several stairs, so people with mobility difficulties may have some challenges.

A bientôt à l'abbaye.

An unmissable outing if you go to Mont-Saint-Michel for the day. The verticality of the building, which is celebrating its 1000th anniversary this year, is exceptional and will probably leave you speechless.
Entry is possible until one hour before closing and in this season, arriving a few minutes before 5:00 p.m., we took advantage of both magnificent light, but also a reduced number of tourists on place.
Entrance costs 11 euros per adult and is free for under 18s.
It is possible to rent audio guides for 3 euros.
The tour lasts between 1:30 and 2:00.
We didn't see the time passing.

Pearl that you absolutely must do if you are in Normandy and Brittany. Already in the distance, arriving by car or public transport you can see the complex. If you arrive by car there are many paid parking lots, from there you can decide whether to walk the last stretch of road (the Recommendation to better admire the bay) or there is a shuttle that takes you to the entrance of the walls. Important if you want to avoid long queues, buy tickets for the abbey online and go early in the morning. The flow of people arriving and continuing throughout the day.

Needless to say, it is a famous tourist destination. It was a place rich in nature where you could feel the tides and tides as well as being exposed to history.
The monastery is the main building and it costs €13 to get inside. The information tablets you can rent out are available for €5, and when I tried them, they were very easy to understand and useful. If this is your first visit, I would like to make Recommendations.
Souvenir shops and other shops line the area around the monastery, and some restaurants serve their specialty omelets, but the hilly road requires comfortable shoes.
Buses depart from all over the country, and this time we visited Khan City in about two hours one way. The total stay was about 4 hours, but I felt that if I was going to take my time, I should stay a little longer.

This place is amazing! It has been on my bucket list for some time. A few pointers to help future travelers here. Come early or come later as midday is packed! Our tour guide told us one day in June they nearly 50k yes 50 thousand tourists in one day. The main street is narrow so add in a few thousand tourists with their kids wandering about, people stopping to check their phones or just staring plus they bring their dogs. It is not really a dog friendly place so I don't know they do but they do. Plus not all folks pick up after their dogs, yep watch where ya step! Dogs are not allowed into the abbey in case it is not mentioned on their official webpage. We stayed here overnight so we just stayed in our room until about 430 or so and the town was emtpy! We got to walk all over the whole of it (minus the abbey) without people to step over! Priceless! The abbey we did the next day with a Get your guide tour! Her name was Claire and she was full of a LOT of info. More than 2 hours of info! She was awesome! We started doing Get your guide tours after we went to Paris last year and they are worth every penny! Easy into and a great tour throughtout! The views from up top are incredible! Another point of interest here the car park is far from the Mount so you can either walk 2.5 km or more or take the very over crowded shuttles. We ended up walking back as the que for the shuttle was nearly hundred people deep.

We had a wonderful experience in the Normandy WW11 landing beaches & were looking forward to seeing Mont Saint Michel. We knew that we needed to get there early & avoid weekends but Wednesday in mid June was a zoo. We stood in a long line for a bus but when we got to the Mount it was like a rugby scrum. The Main Street looked quaint but was jam packed. Tremendous lines for the toilets( one for €1 & the free one not cleaned & according to lines of school kids, very smelly. You paid individually for anything that you wanted to see or do but the overwhelming crush of people quickly made up our minds to leave. What would it be like in summer.Looks as if a quota system would let people get a better experience. Yes, it’s a beautiful monument but we couldn’t get into a single paid sight. Hate to give this bad review but people need to realise before they come

Good afternoon,
When reading your message, I don't see any mention of our monument - The Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. If you have made this visit, we hope you appreciate it. Your comment here describes the activities within the village. The attendance of Le Mont-Saint-Michel is high during Summer, it is no longer a secret. We always recommend a visit during low season for visitors who favour calm areas.

Definitely a thing to visit. The downside is the amount of people that make the visit less than enjoyable, all lined up like animals. Crazy restaurant prices. Price for visit to the monastery plus audio guide 14.50 euros per person, parking 21 euros. I recommend anyone who decides to visit it to bring a packed lunch

I was full of expectations for this visit, because this is a place I have always dreamed of seeing. But, alas, I can't say I was completely satisfied. First of all, it's a real struggle, because you have to queue after row, or rather, it would be better to say that the whole visit is spent in queues with other people. Once you arrive at the car park (21 euros from around 10am to 4pm), you line up for the shuttle. You will find someone who will encourage you to go on foot (2.5 km), saying that it takes less time, but it is not true. There are many shuttles and they come and go. In ten minutes you are at the foot of the village. There is an immense crowd queuing up, eating, buying. The impression is that of being in Diagon Alley from Harry Potter and the village looks a bit like Hogsmeade. Going up you arrive at the foot of the abbey. There are three rows in a single scale: groups, booked, unbooked. We were not booked and we did well, because we cannot guarantee an arrival time, as is requested at the time of booking, and also because even those who have booked queue and don't miss anything. Inside the route is forced and quite disappointing: no furnishings, only the beautiful architectural structure. At the end of the visit there was an incredible queue to leave. At a certain point there is a small junction where those who want to see the abbey, those who are just leaving and those who want to go to a panoramic point are concentrated. If I had known, I wouldn't have gone in. Ditto queuing to take the shuttle back. The place is very nice but very poorly managed. The prices in shops and restaurants are exorbitant and sometimes without quality

Amazing historical attraction if your able to spend a day away from Paris. The views are mesmerizing ! I’m writing this review because I had a hard time figuring out how to get to Mont Saint Michel from Paris. First we booked the 6:45 am train from Gare Montparnasse on the SNCF Connect to Renne. Within the Renne station their is a section with busses outside. You then take the keolis-armor.com bus from Renne to Mont Saint Michel at 8:45. Make sure to buy the return ticket too at 5pm from Mount Saint Michel to Renne. It sells out… so make sure to buy these in advance with your train tickets. Also train tickets seem to get more expensive as you get closer to your departure dates like flights. Then you book the 6:35 back from Renne to Paris Gare Montparnasse. It surely beats being on a bus for 3 hours. We had extra space on the train and packed a lunch and did not have to worry about going to the bathroom as the busses don’t have bathrooms here. Make sure to buy your tickets to the Abby in advance as it appears to sell out too. I would recommend buying a sandwich and drink the day before as you might not have time to buy it at the train station the morning of. Also, the bus does not allow you to eat food or coffee except water. So don’t buy anything before the bus when you get to Renne. Hope this helps.

How does the audio guide work: Can it be played out loud on "speaker" so all nearby people can hear it, or must it be played through headphones, so I must purchase one for each visitor? Thanks!
Written 5 September 2022
Dear Lylie, the audioguide must be used like a phone. One device per person. It cannot be played out on speaker. We must ensure the tranquility of the rooms of our monument. Audioguide is not included in the entrance fee (€11). Please count an extra of €3 to rent a device.

Dears,
The evening visit inside the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel takes place during the months of July and August only, each year. In 2022, it is possible to attend the nocturnal show from Monday to Saturday, between July 2nd and August 27th. Opening hours in the evening : from 7.30pm to midnight - last access to the abbey before 11.00pm.

We plan to be in this area in June. I have read many things about the number of steps and the fact that there are no handrails. The notes indicate anywhere from 300 to 1000 stairs. That’s a pretty big variance. Can anyone be more specific as to the number of stairs? Also, if one cannot do the stairs, is it possible to get a good view and pictures of the Abbaye from the parking level without going up the stairs? Appreciate all recs! TIA!

You will be dealing with stairs your entire time there. We were there last December. We got there mid afternoon on the first day and just explored the hotel and surrounding area at MSM We explored the Abbey the following day and left late afternoon. I didn't count the steps but did have my fitbit on. On the first day, I climbed 25 floors. On the second day, visit of the abbey, I climbed 57 floors. I believe according to fitbit, each floor is a 10 foot elevation gain, so roughly 12 steps (of course uneven in old structures). Please note that fitbit counts climbing slopes. If you don't have any health issues that could become dire climbing steps, I would definitely encourage going.
