This is by far the most authentic walled town/castle we have visited in Europe that a few paople still call home. Amazing to try to figure out why the Templars built there then????????

A great place to wander around. There are also a good number of country walks on excellent paths in the surrounding area. You can make the walks as gentle or as strenuous as you like. No entry charge as such - though there is a...More

The village was originally built by the Knights Templar and has retained a lot of the features and buildings from that time. There are also a wide selection of shops selling a variety of hand crafted and locally produced items.

Unlike the similar, but larger Carcassonne, La Couvertoirade is not at all 'touristy' or commercialised, but rather a wonderful little time capsule that rewards the inquisitive visitor. Upon arriving resist the temptation to stop at the closest parking space once through the automatic barrier, but...More

Home of the Knights of Templar, so quite an important historical town. Although most of the buildings are converted to shops (similar to Mont St. Michel), the village is charming and easy to appreciate and navigate. Worth a detour if you are in the area...More

It's quite touristy, but really quaint. The old knights templar tomb stones in the churchyard are worth a look at. You have to pay to use the car park - or you cant get out! But it's only about 3 euro

It's probably one of the most authentic Templar villages, with lots of twisty streets and a fascinating church and Templar graveyard. However, we found it to be a little too touristy, being well stocked with shops and restaurants. Be aware that the parking is outside...More

We now live in France but have lived in Italy for years before. Virtually any Italian hilltown of the equivalent size -- I'm thinking Calcata or Ceri or Bagnoregio -- is more attractive than this particular place. True, La Couvertoirade is not (yet) a rip-off,...More

Excellent atmospheric gem of a place. Less commercialised than Carcassone which we had visited a couple of days previously. A little off the beaten track but well worth the trip.

It must get crowded in high summer (that car park takes a lot of coaches) but we missed the crowds in late May and strolled this beautiful, peaceful , tiny and ancient stone village with barely another soul about.Interesting Knights Templar history, an old castle...More
