Visit is composed of some info stands that you visit on your own. Then there is a short video explaining what is the site about and what they do. Finally there is a guided demo outside explaining the basic principles using small mirrors. You walk next to the big infrastructure but nothing else. All together is quite educational, although you... More

Our hotel overlooked this amazing structure, so we had to go down the next morning to see what it was all about. The education centre has a lot of written material (in French, but they have photocopied booklets in many languages) and some interactive displays too. An explanatory video has English subtitles. A very good & educational site with some good & graphic demonstrations of the power of the sun if you can collect it. They cater for non-French speakers in the films being sub-titled and they give you laminated information packs in your own language so you can keep up with what's going on. For teenage kids in particular it's excellent.

Found it quite interesting - working on Oil and gas industry getting bored hearing we could do with "green energy" it was the opportunity for my family to see what are real possibility and current challenge of solar energy. The outside site with demo on parabolic mirror and heliostats was generating direct interest on audience. Such temperature with just sunlight... More

I'm afraid to say after visiting today that the place is in need of some TLC - in places it looks abandoned, yet poses such a dominating site on the landscape, could have easily been featured on a james bond movie set. Such a shame, needs some of the instruction plates to be in English German and other languages.

We walked from the station at Font Romieu, it isn't far and the walk is lovely. It is signposted as you leave the station. The visit was fascinating with the science very well explained. Ask at the desk for a translation in English of the information panels. What an amazing place, it is worth just going to see the reflection... More

Thank you for your post. The guided tour makes it possible to see a truth small solar furnace in action. By large sun a piece of wood ignites in less than one second. Possibly the rudest and most unfriendly welcome I have ever experienced at a visitor attraction. The woman at the "welcome desk" was haughty and supercilious; rude to an extent that I can only assume that she is a public sector worker with a job for life and therefore has zero customer service ethic. In itself the four solaire and the... More

Good Morning, Your Tripadvisor profile indicates that you live in Font Romeu (France). We live in the same city. Your opinion written in English is surprising. You visit would date of July 14th, 2014 at 10 a.m. At this time, it was a person in charge who was at welcome desk. The behavior that you describe would be suicidal for... More

For various reasons we only viewed the solar furnace from outside rather than doing the full visit. It is a very impressive installation and makes a great focus for a drive in the region, with great views of both the surrounding countryside and mountains and an impressive sight of a great engineering feat.

Courteous and friendly this interesting place was well worth the small entrance fee. Considering the whole group on the tour we joined was French they helpfully gave the one person in our group who could translate time to do so on the walk around. They then arranged a seperate screening of the 'in house' documentary so it could be in... More

I first visited the Four Solaire in 1980. It is one of the most impressive sights in Europe; back then there was a comprehensive tour of the building with a demonstration of the power of the Sun. A thick metal plate was burnt through in seconds! A real James Bond moment. In 2013 all this has changed: you get a... More
