Le Grande Arche de la Defense is a contemporary building located in Puteaux town, which is located in the surroundings of París, the main city in France. It is a big arch in a modern neighborhood. It was built at the end of the 20th Century as a big project of François Mitterrand to commemorate the 200 years of French Revolution. Really, it is a very beautiful building, from where you can see this modern neighborhood with a lot of skyscrapers. In fact, you can see it from the bottom and it is awesome. Nowadays it is not possible to visit because inside there are offices from different enterprises.

La Grande Arche de la Défense is a monument and building in the business district of La Défense. It’s a relatively new addition to the cityscape of Paris, being inaugurated in 1989. I get the feeling that Parisians either love it or hate it. It’s a curious structure, roughly in the shape of a cube with the centre scooped out. It’s bold, and has been cleverly aligned to the historic axis from Musée du Louvre to Place de la Concorde, along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées to The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile, and then along Avenue Charles De Gaulle across the River Seine to La Défense. It’s about 4 kilometres from the Arc de Triomphe.

The forecourt is spacious, and from there you’ll get a great view of the grand scale of the building. You can take a lift to the observation deck on the bridge of the construction. It costs from between €13 and €16 to visit. The observation deck was closed on the evening that we were visiting; it is open from 10.00 am to 6.30pm daily. I have been to the observation deck on a previous visit to Paris, and my opinion is that it’s not worth bothering to do so. You’ll see the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and the Montparnasse Tower, and lots of avenues and rooftops. You’ll get far better views of the various Parisian landmarks and the historic axis which links the Grande Arche to La Louvre from the observation deck of the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. It’s only a couple of Euros more, for a far superior view. And if you are lucky enough, as I was during the summer, you may get a fabulous view of the setting sun shining directly through the Grande Arche de la Défense from the Arc de Triomphe. It was a memorable moment.

The nearest Metro station to the monument is La Defense - Grande Arche, on Metro Line 1. There is also a RER station at the monument.

Nice little gem in the town of La Defense. You will need to pay a few Euros to use the elevator. But once at the top you have unobstructed views of the city. Very nice.

Facing the Arc de Triomphe, this modern structure affords great views of the city without the same lines seen at the Arc or the Eiffel Tower. Huge observation deck on top of the arch along with a restaurant open at certain times and an art exhibition area indoors below the observation deck. There's a lift to take you to the exhibit area first, then another lift to the observation deck, if so needed, or you climb some steep steps (quite a few) to reach the top. Great views and much less crowded than downtown.

The business district offers a completely different version of Paris. From the top of the Arch you get wonderful views of the city and there are deckchairs where you can relax if the weather is nice. The shop is very imited and the cafe closed.

Just another tourist trap. 16eur just to take an elevator up. To use the telescopes, you needed to pay again. Nothing else to offer (just a few scattered chairs) on a rotten deck. Don't bother!

This unique holed-cubed building is one of the more understated attraction in Paris as it continues to live in the shadows of the other more famous towers, monuments and museums. Located at Paris’ business district housing numerous big French corporations, the Grande Arche de la Defense is worth a visit for 3 reasons - it is less crowded, the entrance fee is a fraction of its more famous rivals, and the views (from 110m) which include the district’s skyscrapers are equally spectacular. This attraction is included as part of the Paris Pass, so Paris Pass holders should try to accommodate this attraction into their itinerary.

This is a place to visit if you are staying more than a week in Paris or if you have already covered the "must-see" attractions.

The whole area is very unique and worths a visit. You can go on top of the Arche and dine at the very expensive but panoramic restaurant.

There is a shopping mall in the basement where Frenchies go for everyday shopping. Fair prices and interesting shopping experience for foreigners.

I have not been back to this area of Paris since July 2000 and the area has sure expanded with much more new tall office buildings. Take Line 1 Metro to the end of the line at Grande Arche de la Defense- it is located a bit out of the main Paris border so the cost is a bit more than the regular Metro fare. Well worth to have a visit here especially when you have visited the top of the Arc de Triomphe and viewed it from a distance. You feel so tiny right at the base of the Arche. Walk down the walkway following along all the high rise buildings. This is the area of Paris where the newer portion of high rise buildings of offices are located and also a huge shopping mall. All of a sudden you may feel like you actually left Paris behind with all the historical buildings as everything here feels like more modern. There are supposed to be many interesting art installations here but there are not maps available to locate them. You just need to walk around and look for them. Many installations have been blocked up by boards, perhaps due to remodeling. One of the most interesting one I located was a fountain of running water in a tiled pool with the backdrop of high rise buildings. Well worth an hour here to visit this rarely visited part of Paris!

Me and my girlfriend (both 18) attempted to visit the top of the Arche but were turned away on the basis that we were both children (?). I attempted to purchase a full fare ticket as well thinking that it might be a quirk of their system but the lady at the desk was totally uncompromising. Wasted journey.
