Amazing rock formations
Aug 2019
Being a bit of a geology geek I totally love walking round gawping at the massive stones that line the valley and wondering how the devil they got there.
Great for walking in the shade on a hot day, the dog absolutely loves playing in the water.
Recommended if you're in this part of the world.
Park at the church at St Anne de Houlin and eat your picnic there before setting off.

Overwhelming nature experience. Different tracks and distances over small forest paths. Very beautiful with children and the family dog.

Lovely walk but beware of the directions
Aug 2017 • Family
We had a lovely day walking beside the river and clambering over the rocks, but we did not get off to an auspicious start.
We parked by the bridge in Ste-Anne du Houlin and, having consulted the route map on the sign next to the river, we set off in the direction suggested (anti-clockwise). Having walked and climbed upwards for some time, we found we'd taken a wrong turn and were overlooking a large lake! Seems we'd gone north, although we still don't know how or where we went wrong. We retraced our steps and ate our picnic in the large, grassy area next to the river, across from the car park. (There is also a cafe here if you prefer).
We started again, this time simply following the river from next to the sign by the bridge, and enjoyed a lovely walk along the river and the 'chaos'. It's a little rough and steep/slippery in places, but out party of eight managed fine - including a nine year old and two adults in their sixties.
Very enjoyable on a sunny day, but be careful with the signage and directions!

Fantastic riverside walk on a sunny day
Aug 2016
Bring your stout boots and enjoy the most fantastic riverside walk of your life! You'll need to be relatively fit, as there are some steep places. Good footwear is essential too, as it could be slippery in wet weather. Go on a sunny day, bring a picnic, and sit on a massive boulder in the middle of the river to eat it in the sun. A wonderful afternoon out for 5- to 80-year-olds (if fit and able-bodied).

Beautiful and mysterious walk – choose your start wisely.
Aug 2016 • Couples
Do not make the same mistake we did. We started the walk at Saint Julien behind the Church. This is way too far to start the walk. If you start at this point it will take about 45min before you meet the beauty of Les Chaos du Gouet. It’s hard to find signs to put you in the right direction. It’s just horrible. If you do start here there’s a massive gate that will lead you into the forest. But be aware, when we visited the signs were hard to find and it’s easy to get lost. Therefore I recommend starting at St Anne du Houlin. (we passed this point near the end of our walk that started behind the Church, it took around 45min extra to walk back over the street (D40) to Saint Julien).

Start at ST Anne Du Houlin - Search for the Chapelle of St. Anne Du Houlin – there’s a parking spot and you can start right beside the river where you can walk the entire river up and down.
The entire walk (if you start at St Anne Du Houlin) is approximately 10.4KM and should take around 3 hours. I suggest counting 4 hours since you will probably stop a few times to enjoy the view and to enjoy the smell of the forest.

The signs beside the paths are easy to spot and will guide you in the good direction. Don’t worry.
It’s also easy to take a shortcut, just cross the river at one of the bridges and turn back to St Anne Du Houlin.

Be sure to wear decent walking shoes if you make the walk on a rainy day, there are plenty of slippery spots so be aware. If you bring food you can rest on one of the stones and enjoy a little meal with a stunning view.

If you love nature and walking you will love this beautiful and mysterious walk.
Enjoy the chaos of Gouet.

Ps: if you use gps just search Saint Anne Du Houlin, it’s a very small village and you cannot miss it, gps coordinates to the start and the parking spot are: 48.456675, -2.832247

A breath of fresh air

Amazing scenery there. You can follow the paths (well kept) or go off track. Good place for a picnic even though there are one or two places where you can eat.

We parked in Sainte-Anne-du-Houlin by the bridge and started the walk at that point. "Les chaos du Gouet" are actually some huge boulders that sit in the middle of the stream-cum-river. They are 3.3km (2 miles) further upstream. The route is pleasant because it is varied: open track next to river; some slight inclines clambering over tree roots etc. However if the boulders seem too far there are several bridges on the way that can be crossed - after 1.1km; 2.3km. We passed the boulders and crossed the bridge 3.6km upstream to make it a round trip of 7.2km (4.5 miles) which took about 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Our ageing parents were with us and the walk was no problem for them even though there were some points that were challenging. Enjoy the Brittany countryside!
