Intriguing Celler del Roure
May 2019
Our visit to Celler del Roure was fascinating. Underground caves from ancient times, buried huge clay amphoras where wine is fermented and aged. Something new to learn about unconventional winemaking. Wine tasting and Tour was different, interesting and fun with some history of the area. Friendly Natalia explained about the early settlers of the area from the 4th century BC called Bastida de les Alcusses, one of the principal Iberian archaeological sites of the Valencia Community.

This hard working family followed their dreams to make wine. With the combination of eye catching modern designer labels honoring the Valencia language and consistently good wines they accomplished for Spain to take notice of their wines. Their project now is to follow their roots recovering grapes indigenous of the area like Mandó and Monstrell. Using wine elaboration techniques in buried clay amphoras that remained “asleep” (as they describe it) for more than 300 years in their cellars. Today 20 are in operation, plans to repair more, to make wine as it was done since the fourth century BC.
We took home a bottle of “Les Prunes” Blanc de Mandó 2017, spectacular rosé with white spirit. Opened it for Sunday brunch, wonderful, wish we had purchased another one.

Located in Moixent part of Les Terres dels Alforins, what now is called Toscana D.O Valencia. Visiting Celler del Roure deserves a detour from the traditional known wineries. Nominal charge will get you tour, wine tasting, a complimentary bottle of wine and glass. Only open Saturday, Sundays and local holidays. info@cellerdelroure dot es

After this memorable visit we had lunch at close by Finca Pitxó. Out in a beautiful countryside, delicious local food and friendly fast service. Another wonderful experience for this day in May 2019.

We still had to drive to Guadalest to spend the night at Cases Noves. To Alcoi, then highway CV70 driving a winding mountain road with many curves, some of them hairpins. Only 1:30 hrs away. The two lane road was in very good condition passing picturesque villages. Driving our rented Fiat 500 was perfect for this road. Cases Noves has remarkable views and welcoming hosts.

This Sunday will be memorable.

Fascinating underground caves - old and new
Dec 2018 • Couples
Irrespective of whether or not you like the taste of the wine stored in the clay amphora, it is fascinating to visit the old cave that is centuries old and then see the new one they are creating to hold more huge amphora to expand their operation. Super enthusiastic host for our tour and tasting. Bought some of his dragonfly edition.
