Churches, I find, are amazing places to visit. As well as being places of worship, they show local history and are places to view great art. If one loves to visit churches, Denmark is a good place to indulge oneself. Hundreds were built in the 13th and 14th centuries. As one drives the countryside, you will notice their familiar shape,... I am not one to travel the world spending my time looking at churches but this is one steeped in history and well worth the visit. Østerlars is the largest and most beautiful of 4 Round Churches on the island of Bornholm. The walls are over a meter thick and the artwork you find inside send you back in time.... More

Read all the other reviews. It is an interesting place to visit. I couldn't imagine a wall with a staircase built into it but there it is. When we visited there had been a service earlier that day with Harvest offerings, would have liked to have gone to the service although not for religious reasons.....shame on me?

This church is the biggest round church on Bornholm - it is fair prized and very beautiful. Don't forget go up the narrow steps found by the alter, first floor to visit the great historic exhibition and 2nd floor to visit the ghosts...

When you take the spiral staircase that leads to the top, you can see how the wooden beams were aligned to keep the pointed top stable and circular. Pretty good for the 1100s!

This is a very unusual and interesting piece of church architecture. It is great to explore the insides by climbing up narrow stone stairs inside the thick walls all the way up to the attic. The wodden spines supporting the roof and the exterior stone support walls give a good impression for the hard work, ingenuitiy, and commitment of the... More

Why did they build these churches almost 900 years ago? Fortification, observation, religion? Were the knigth templars involved? Kids love to climp the upper floors, and there's great info boards up there as well.

The island is so small that one can see all four of the round churches for which Bornholm is famous. They are each unique and offer a different perspective of the island's history. Østelars Rundkirke has a fantastic organ and is quite large. It is very much worth it if you are visiting or staying on the northern part of... More

There are only 4 of this kind of churches on Bornholm and it is a very special and uncommon type of church in Denmark. The church has also been a place of protections for the local people. The church is very well maintained and have very nice wall paintings and two entrance doors - one for women and one for... More
