Reliable safe vessels are the best way to see the Cinque Terre from Portovenere. Ticket booth staff are some of the rudest people I have ever encountered. Best to learn Italian in advance because asking basic questions in English gets you scowls!

We jumped on in the beginning of the tour in Viareggio, the ferry pick you up on the end of the pier at the beachside at 9 in the morning. They only sell tickets on the boat and you have to pay in cash.
