Breathtaking views…

We drove up the mountain to see just how high we could get and what views we would be rewarded with. We weren’t disappointed at all. The roads are excellent and wind their way up through villages that in Winter time would be brought to life with skiers.
The views just get better and better. There were a number of cyclists making their way towards the summit and their efforts were impressive. The gradients and hairpins on some of the roads were exhilarating.
You can take your car high up the mountain and when you reach the point where a vehicle can go no further it is well signed and there is a plenty of space to leave your vehicle and if you so desire you can continue on foot. There is a small cafe which sells non alcoholic and alcoholic drinks and a variety of snacks.
The view from this point was spectacular. You could see the Adriatic and the towns below.
The flora and fauna here was amazing and very varied. The temperature drop is a good 10 degrees and with the windchill factor it’s worth having a light jacket with you.
It’s great seeing the chairlifts (they weren’t running) and imaging the place all covered in snow and busy with skiers and winter sports lovers.
This is definitely a drive worth taking, if only to be rewarded with those spectacular views and the wonderful cooler, fresh air.

I would need a book to describe this mountain, i can just say, go, rent a car or a bike and get lost within the hills, the valleys, the small towns (go to Pretoro), the little trattoria's, the vineyards and the local culture always friendly and welcoming.

Majestic mountain!

We saw this mountain when we were staying at the Villa Maiella in Guardiagrele and it was snow-capped in May. It was great to see it again in Sulmona.

La Maiella

We visited the town of Sulmona in the region of Abruzzo in Augusta, 2018. It is a gorgeous little town - world famous for its ‘confetti’ (sugared almonds) which are traditionally used for weddings. Sulmona has the majestic Maiella as it’s backdrop. Worth the visit.

Beautiful Sulmona
Nov 2017 • Couples
The majestic Maiella mountain rises on the outskirts of this beautiful town. It is the gateway to the Maiella National Forest and all of its wonder, and a terrific place to base a trip to Abruzzo.

The Maiella Mountain is one of several in an Italian National Park here. Hiking is good, trails are developed, scenery is beautiful.

Majestic Mountains
Sep 2015 • Couples
Sulmona is the most beautiful place surrounded by gorgeous mountain views. The mornings are misty and cooler breezes blow early even in September when we visited. I would love to come back when the skiing season is in full swing just to see the breathtaking views.

The only thing I can say, Sulmona is extremely lucky to overlook such a mountain! Exploring both of them will definitely give you an experience.

Amazing Maiella
Jan 2015 • Friends
Maiella Mountain is fantastic! You can see Maiella around Sulmona like a beautiful paint in its blue and green colours. In autumn you can see the yellow leaves on the ground and in front of you Maiella is shinning like gold...Amazing!
