Great for family skiing
Feb 2019 • Family
We have been coming to Roccaraso and in particular Aremogna Pizzalto for the last 3 years during February half term. It’s perfect for the family, inexpensive to rent ski equipment and the ski passes are flexible enough to allow for mixed abilities. As a helpful tip I would avoid Italian holidays such as the week of Shrove Tuesday as it does get very busy! Otherwise you will have the place to yourselves during week days, no queues at ski lifts here! Easy parking at 4 Euros a day. Just love the place!

Pleasantly surprised!

I was surprised to find such a great ski area so far south. The ski season is not long but for the time it is open there's some good skiing or snowboarding. The coverage is not always fantastic and I have jacked up my base on some rocks. Because the temperature warms and freezes there are sections where it gets icy. Best to go on weekdays if possible, especially right after a storm so you can experience at least a little powder. If you're new to the European skiing experience you should just know to never ever go skiing on a weekend. Europeans don't do lines at the lifts and will push and shove and stand all over your snowboard and the resorts tend to sell so many tickets that the mountain gets overly crowded. It's just not worth it. However, on a weekday, you can't beat this place without going all the way up to the Dolomites!

Fab place to ski for 4 days with our 3 teens! Can’t wait to go back. 2 hour drive from Rome. Lots of red and blue runs but blacks also as well as the possibility to ski off piste for the braver ones. Some yum food on the mountain too.

The best place of Center-Southern Italy

Roccaraso is definitively a good place for skiing, as good as the Alps. There is a good mix of easy, intermediate and difficult slopes, while the best you get from off-piste :-)

Friendly, helpful rental and ticket staff. Excellent care of the slopes despite poor snowfall. Beautiful views from all faces of the mountain.

Lots of slopes for all levels, and even cross-country skiing possibilities
Mar 2015
Alto Sangro is a great place for both downhill skiing and cross-country skiing. The only disadvantage is the parking. We had to walk quite far with our skis, so I recommend that you arrive early! We had lots of fun and surprisingly few people in the slopes we chose, in one of them were were basically alone - what a luxary!

Roccaraso Ski Pass, great value
Feb 2015 • Family
The Roccaraso ski area is not well know in the UK, no one believes you can ski near Rome, but it is a great area for a weeks skiing with some really nice bars around the slopes. You will need a photo for the pass which is a wireless one.

We went half term week and never had any queues and great some. This was a really cheap holiday compared to the main resorts in the Alps, give it a try.

Easy to sort from the centre of Roccaraso - English isn't widely spoken in this part of Italy but we sorted fine.

Unknown gem for British skiers

Due to the big holiday companies rip-off culture during the February half-term skiing season I dedcided to find an 'off the beaten track' ski reort and was pleasantly surprised with the result in finding over 100km of piste at Roccaraso in the beautiful Italian region of Abruzzo. Although this year was not their best, the snowfall is generally exceptional for a resort so far south in Italy. We (my wife, Son and I) flew into Naples and was met by the owner of our chosen accomadation, IL Lavatoio, (also well recommended), for the 1.25 hours transfer, obviously we paid him to transfer us but it was cheaper than hiring a car. There is one gondola at the resort and numerous chairlifts (some rather slow) and a few button lifts. the treelined runs towards Rivisondoli are very pleasant too. The resort is probably best for intermediates with only two 'Black' runs available. There were no queues to speak of even though it was school holidays. The Beer in the mountain restuarants (very Important) was 4Euros for a 'Large' bottle(660ml) and a plate of freshly cooked pasta around the 8Euros. The ski hire was very cheap compared to alpine resorts. Overall if you are trying to do a ski holiday and not get ripped off by the tour companies I would recommend exploring this option.
