Sanctuary is a must see.

This ancient monastery is a must see if you visit the Rieti region. The home of Saint Francesco for a number of years is steeped in history and immaculately preserved.
There are nativity scenes from many countries around the world.

Worth a visit
Jan 2017 • Friends
Greccio is a lovely little hill town which is where St. Francis of Assisi started the live prescepes or nativity re-enactments. The town still puts one on at Christmas time but bitterly cold weather kept us from staying for it. We did, however, have a wonderful lunch at a little hidden gem of a restaurant called Ristoro Friggitoria Paninoteca which is on the way to the nativity museum. It has a set menu which was fine with us. We enjoyed good salame, cheese, breads, polenta and hearty sausages over a three course meal. It was also well priced. We then went to visit the nativity museum which had a number of beautiful and artistic prescepes. The church is also worth seeing and the scenery over the valley is beautiful. We will go back and visit this little gem of a town when the weather is warmer.

A sublime experience.

A pretty little village on a hill, fantastic views. Very church- and artist-oriented, there are religious murals on just about every building. You leave feeling more refreshed and relaxed than when you arrived.

Cute town and Saint Francis centric
Jun 2015 • Couples
The two churches in the small square feature Saint Francis. Don't miss. The parking was just below the entrance into the town square. Go on a non tourist day like we did. A few days later on a Sunday it was jammed.

Lovely views and interesting visit. A good insight in how the Franciscan monks lived in the 16th century. Lovely exhibition of various religious cribs.

There are a number of sanctuaries of St. Francis in this area. Each are special in their own way. This one is probably the best of them all.

Magical atmosphere

A wonderful village set among the mountains where you can enjoy a wonderful view, have good food and visit the Franciscan Sanctuary of the First Crib. It is worth a visit, to relax and forget the stress of your everyday life.

Enjoyable visit
May 2014 • Friends
Greccio is a pretty little village with wonderful scenery but the main attraction to the area is the sanctuary set in the hills, where St Francis made his home. Beautiful, peaceful setting. Really interesting to see the original and new churches and learn more about his life. This us the birthplace of the Christmas Nativity scene that is set out by Christians worldwide each December. Must be able to manage steps to access anything, so could be a problem for some people wishing to visit.

a nice stroll in the the country

if you are interested in a scenic place , not very far from Rieti, where you can enjoy the scenarios of mother nature, some quiet and the opportunity to visit the monastery of saint Francis, where he made the first nativity representation you are in the right place.
it is also nice to visit the small but characteristic medieval town center 3 kilometers from the monastery and museum. parking is free and there are four typical restaurant in the town center that serve original regional food and drinks.

Did we miss something
Jul 2013 • Couples
There was a trail of murals/ paintings on the walls by various artist but this did nothing to improve our initial impression on arriving in the village: everything was too clean, too white, too perfect. There was no atmosphere despite the fact there was a wedding taking place whilst we were there. Very disappointed.
