Prato has been a textile production center since at least the middle ages. There were 2 special exhibits when we visited: Luxury fabrics from the early Renaissance and contemporary Chinese fabric art. The former added depth to our appreciation of paintings of important people seen...More

This museum has a small but significant collection of extremely early fabrics, mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries, which are very well presented. It then moves on to fairly standard stuff about fabric production. Given the size of the building at their disposal it's...More

Smallish but very good museum dedicated mainly to the history of the textile industry of Prato but also includes a good section on the different materials used in fabrics and methods. But the piece-de-resistance is the "museum" of old fabrics and costumes. Stunning collection.

Housed in an old wool mill, this museum is well curated and beautifully designed. Excellent historic collection, and cool gift shop!

Please note, as this museum only has one staff member, the museum and shop actually closes at 2pm as we were very rudely told by the woman who wouldn't even look at us. We were very disappointed. So be careful!
