A long steep hike to excellent views

Not a lot to see in the castle itself, but its worth the long uphill walk through the old town for spectacular views

My husband had our wedding at this castle and the experience has made our marriage more special <3 Be sure to bring comfortable shoes to the steep ascent. The views up the castle are unparalleled!

It was a long way up (just joking, it's an easy climb) and with a spectacular view so don't forget to take shots from every angle. My friend unfortunately bought a bottle of Ligurian oil before reaching the castle which is disappointing so please buy your gifts in your way back!!!

If for no other reason the entrance fee (€5) is worth it just for the view. They could do so much more with this space, I'm sure there's local artisans that would happily set up their arts, crafts and food if given the opportunity.

This is to not a must do activity, but is great for a morning walk and the views from the castle are nice. Only some of the original walls of the castle (fort) remain.

It has very pretty views and a good amount of walking can be done there. There are many small paths that take you around the town which allows for a more intimate and off the beaten track tour of the Portovenere.

Lovely surprise we had when we decided to enter this attraction, we were even wondering if it was worth it to pay, but I gotta say it was probably one of the highlights of our long weekend in le cinque terre. This outsider (Porto Venere) could easily be the most beautiful town if the region, loved it all and the... More

Castello Doria was built in the sixteenth century by the Genoese on pre-existing Roman Byzantine and medieval fortifications. The cost to tour the castle is only €5 and is certainly worth that just for the splendid views of the harbor and the village.

Castles and defensive fortifications always have the best vistas in an area- it was imperative to see the enemy first. For us now, this translates into wonderful observation spots. Castle Doria is mostly ruined or dismantled but what is remaining is in nice condition. You can visit most areas and explore around for hours.

There are castles and then there are castles. On our travels to Europe I have seen many. Personally I prefer the ones where much more is preserved. What is left here are just remnants of what it used to be...centuries ago. But if you have a little extra time in Porto Venere, do climb up. We felt quite accomplished after... More
