Not great

Our guide was difficult to understand. Be prepared for walking bent over for part of the tour. Interesting to see, but not a “Must do”.

Enlightening tour
Jun 2019
The tour guide was very enthusiastic and tried his very best to translate into English.
Very interesting facts about life underground. Explained the flooding and how they have tried to overcome this.

Bought a combined/multi ticket with the cathedral but the staff were not very up to date with tour times. We arrived at a listed time with no one arriving. Came back for next scheduled tour and they just said that time was not running that day. Be nice if baptistery staff had been informed.we could have planned our day a bit better.

Despite some negatives reviews, I decided to visit it and I enjoy it. I found out a lot of history. The guide was very kind and answered all questions. The ticket costs is 10 euros. Be carreful: during the tour, there could be water on the ground, so it’s better to take the right shoes.

We found the whole underground thing an attempt to make an ordinary tour extraordinary, since there wasn't that much to see in the tunnels underground that couldn't be explained equally as well above ground. It didn't quite work for us.The English tour guide was fine except our guide had a fairly strong accent, making it slightly difficult to catch the entire presentation. There are a few exhibits to be seen in the tunnels but for the most part, they were being used to illustrate some aspects of the local history, rather than being original artifacts that belonged there historically.
The medical school lecture room was interesting to see, and well explained.
On the plus side, we were allowed to bring our dog on the tour (and didn't even need to buy a family pass to do it) so that was cool.

A trip underground sounded interesting. It wasn't. Only for those with children who need entertaining.

Not "wow", but a "Gee, I never thought about that"

Not intending to go to Pistoia, I was delightfully surprised when visiting this town and discovering a place that is not on the beaten path. We originally were drawn to the beautiful ceramic glaze frieze with figures depicting the acts of mercy on the hospital (worth the time to see) when we happened upon the Pistoia Sotterranea. We arrived at the start of an English tour. Our guide, Silvia, made the tour interesting using her sense of humor to highlight points along the way. Part of the tour that gets second billing was the medical school anatomy lab where dissections of human cadavers by medical students took place in the 18th Century. The room is a work of art, and we all wanted to sit in the room a little while. (I wish there was more information on the life of med students in the 1700s, how much money was required to attend a school like this, was this considered prestigious?) The subterranean tour is the main billing and piques your interest at how to dispose of garbage, did they ever clean the river (in the way we might now), was there ever a low river or shortage of water flow backing up dead animals or other blockages under the hospital, how does usage of the river for waste affect clean water supply, and how were they able to create such durable vaults 500 years ago.

I agree with another comment that "those looking for the wow factor will be disappointed, but we like to see things from alternate viewpoints so enjoyed the experience." This is one of those places. If you catch it on the right day and you are in a frame of mind to be open to it, it is a 5 star event.

If you are claustrophobic, you should consider if you will be comfortable. There are stairs and a low ceiling, someone with walking difficulties should ask questions before descending (it is not long, difficult or far but it is uneven).

Under the ground

High recommend! The trip last an hour and doesn't cost much, plus the price include discount on other tickets. This underground experience will show you another aspect of the city built long time ago under the hospital. The guide has a good knowledge and is funny.
I really enjoyed.

Underground hospital

Really interesting tour with knowledgeable guide. Our guide was one of the archaeologists involved in putting the tour together as well as the restoration of this part of the original hospital. Amazing sense of history dating back to thirteenth century until 2013!... The guide and the ticket seller had very good command of English for our benefit and we had written guides to follow as well. Definitely worth a visit if you are near pistoia.

An Interesting Trip Back in Time
Jun 2018 • Solo
The tour itself runs just under an hour, and explores the several centuries of history that make up the Ospedale del Ceppo and the world beneath it. It is a cool way to walk through parts of history often unexplored, including one of Italy's oldest surgical amphitheatres for pathological examination.

The guides are very kind, and if you happen to miss the few English language tours that go during the day (the last being at 14:00), they do have English documentation that covers what the guides are saying. Groups tend to be small as the spaces are cramped at times. There are also a lot of low ceilings, so mind your head.

A different perspective on Pistoia
Oct 2017 • Couples
This 50 minute guided tour takes one to the “classroom” where cadavers were cut up for the benefit of medical students in the 15 / 16 th centuries. Then underground to see the old city foundations and to hear about an early hospital and its treatment of the plague, to see an old re-routed creek, etc. We took a tour with an Italian-speaking guide - no problem, as the English information sheet is sufficiently explicit
