Amazing old church - 1000 AD
Oct 2019
This is the oldest church in Orvieto, so is less ornate than the Renaissance-era churches. But the frescoes are beautiful, some of which have been restored. It's interesting to see the simple nature of the church from that time period. The bell tower, which still rings for Mass on Sunday and other times, also served as a watch tower. The church was strategically built on the edge of the walls for further protection from below. Admission is free and it's open most days.

Stunning glimpse into medieval Italy

Beautifully frescoed and restored church near the cliff - take a walk on the ramparts to fully take in the beauty of Orvieto. A classic gem of the Romanesque with frescoes dating from the era. Not to be missed. Truly sacred.

This church felt sacred
Mar 2019 • Couples
After touring the Duomo in Orvieto, it was quite a contrast to visit this church, the oldest in the city (11th century). We walked in to the aroma of incense as a small gathering, maybe a dozen people at most, were praying and singing. It felt so much more sacred and simple and unadorned compared to the Duomo. And a lot of the frescoes are still vibrant. I loved that the front door was “locked” with a wooden pole fixed across the entryway.

Nice church and great view

In the western part of town where the small church of San Giovenale is located. Built during the 11th century, it contains precious frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries. Right outside the main entrance one can enjoy an amazing view of the surrounding landscape.

Wonderful frescoes
Dec 2018 • Couples
We have been to this church before but were eager to see it again. Said to be constructed in 1004 on the site of an Etruscan to temple to Jupiter, It is full of very old frescoes in good shape.Unfortunately we barge in through a side door into an on going funeral. Although we sat quietly through most of the service we were, of course, unable to take pictures or look around. Be careful and quiet as you enter a church you never know what service might be going on.

Incredible little church all the way at the back of Orvieto. Free admission and worth checking out. Some amazing old murals still intact on the walls.

Go West to San Giovenale
Jun 2018 • Couples
With stunning views of the Umbrian countryside outside its doors, the Chiesa San Giovenale is at the western-most edge of the town of Orvieto. With little commercial activity nearby, the church which is open and free to the public every morning and afternoon is a wonderful space to admire 15th and 16th century frescoes and gain a deeper appreciation for solitude.

Beautiful
May 2018 • Couples
Beautiful medieval church with frescos. Nobody was there except for us. There is a great view from here to the valley below. This is right adjacent to the former St. Agostino church, which is part of the duomo museum that houses some of the magnificent marble statues from the duomo. You can hop on the free bus (circolare C)at via Malabranca, which took us directly back to the Piazza Cahen, where we were parked.

wow, we were so humbled by this visit. The frescos are stunning and the quiet in there is humbling. We sat for 30 minutes just enjoying the simplicity of the space and yet the rich sincere beautiful frescos.
