The True Italian Family Vineyard
Sep 2019
Don't tell anyone but this is the perfect spot to get the real feel of the Umbrian wine country. Cecilia is magnificent in her presentation of her family's lifestyle, success, and products. A wonderful tour, a unique on-site chapel, accommodations for a few...just the perfect countryside, working vineyard experience. Great finished products, too! Highly recommended!!

Wonderful experience
Sep 2018 • Couples
Rick Steve’s recommended but quick tour of the cellars and wine tasting was the perfect start of our vacation. The view of Orvieto from here was stunning. Shipped a case home and glad we did. It was one of the best wines we had in 14 days.

What An Unexpected Surprise!!
May 2018 • Couples
We had arranged a private day tour from our hotel in Fiumicino to Orvieto. Our guide/driver gave us several options of how we wanted to spend the day. One suggestion was to visit this winery/estate for some wine tasting. While driving there he called the estate and luckily we were able to join an already scheduled tour.
What an experience - Cecilia is certainly passionate about her family and their history with this estate.
She was so gracious and knowledgeable.
After giving us a tour of the house and property, we enjoyed wine tasting paired with meats, cheeses, bread and olive oil.
Unlimited tastes by the way. I believe the cost was 15 euros pp but I could be wrong.
The prices of her wine are so reasonable, we couldn't resist buying a case which she had shipped back to the USA.
Shipping was pricey - 120 euros but for 12 bottle that average 5 euros each, we couldn't go wrong.
It took about a month to reach us in California but it arrived well packed and in great shape.
If you are planning to spend some time in Orvieto, you must try to include this in your trip.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 hour wine tasting experience.
HINT - she does accept credit cards but NOT for the shipping. Cash only!!!

Wine tasting pared with the perfect food....what dreams are made of!
Sep 2017 • Couples
If you plan in advance, you can stay on the spectacular property, but be sure to schedule a tour with wine tasting. This is a family run business and the stone farmhouse and chapel are amazing. Under the house are Etruscan wine cellars that are really fun to see. We had an informative discussion about wine making and ended up around a large table laden with cheeses, sliced meats and breads. We tasted a progression of wine and pared it with suggested bites of food. We ended up with pastry and a delicious dessert wine. This was a very fun and filling experience and we purchased a few bottles of wine that we savored later on our trip. The good news is that they sell their wine in the US. Enjoy wandering the property and get some photos with Orvieto off in the distance.

Great experience

My wife and I were very fortunate that we were able to arrange a tour and tasting at this winery. My understanding is that if there is a tour group visiting the winery that individuals can then be added, space permitting. We lucked out as there was a Rick Steves tour coming through during the few days we were in Orvieto.
You may have some difficulty arranging this tour individually. I tried emailing the address listed on their website but did not receive a response. In reading other reviews, this doesn't seem to be uncommon. However, someone posted the owner/tour guide's personal email address so we used this and contacted Cecilia directly and she responded quite quickly.
If you are driving, I suggest you research the map extensively beforehand. Our gps struggled to get us there. In fact, the gps was inadequate in many of the smaller mountain towns. There are so many tiny roads it is hard to differentiate which road to take if the gps says turns right as there are often multiple choices for turning right, etc.
Anyway, back to Le Velette....This winery has been owned by the same family for over a hundred years. Parts of the buildings housing the winery are over 1000 years old! Parts of the wine cellar grottos date back to 400bc! Apparently, the Etruscans first excavated underground to store wine as early as 400bc and this area is still being used today. Over the years, more and more area has been excavated and the wine cellar now extends for about 1/3 of a mile!
Cecelia provided a great deal of info on the history of the area and the winery/wines, in particular. She speaks perfect English and is extremely knowledgeable.
It was an amazing experience and one of the highlights of our trip to Italy.
Oh, and give yourself a few days in Orvieto. It is amazing! One of my favourite towns in Italy.

Idyllic Orvieto
Jun 2017 • Friends
A week spent at Tenuta Le Velette recently was well worthwhile.

Accommodation is suitable for a small family or two couples, and is located just a ten minute drive from Orvieto on a large wine making property.

The hosts Simonetta and Corrado are engaging and most charming. They are able to offer many eating and dining recommendations as a result of the family having a very long connection with the region.

On arriving you will be welcomed by Ombra (Shadow) the dog, and her pals - the two cats with no names. Lacking names doesn't appear to have diminished their enthusiasm to greet you every morning, and indeed whenever you return from a day out. Our group became very attached to all three.

"Il Due " affords 2 bedrooms and a small living space downstairs and kitchen/eating space upstairs and an outdoor terrace and barbecue. While there is a large number of restaurants in Orvieto, a nearby supermarket provides every need for guests who prefer to "dine in".

A short drive on private roads will take you to the pool - a large secluded and shady retreat - for recovery after a day of touring Orvieto and its environs.

Orvieto being only an hour by train from Rome is easily accessible and also has car rental via Hertz. A car is necessary to enable guests at Tenuta Le Velette to enjoy all that Umbria has to offer.

An added benefit is that a supply of excellent wines is available from the winery for your stay... and many restaurants in Orvieto include Le Velette wines on their menus.

Five stars.

Umbrian Idyll
Jun 2017
We stayed with friends at Il Due on the property here.  It would be hard to praise the location, atmosphere and hospitality too much.  The whole thing is idyllic.  Corrado and Simonetta are wonderful hosts. Corrado runs the winery with around 500 acres under vine.  The business has been in his family for around 150 years.  They've created terrific accommodation among the vineyard with a startlingly clear view across to the old city of Orvieto highlighted by the famous duomo.  This is a wonderful area.  Wine has been produced been on this property since Etruscan times, that is from around 500BC.  The original Etruscan cave cellars used for storing wine are still beautifully intact and in use.  You'll see them and taste the beautiful wines if you are smart enough to go on the winery tour run by Corrado's sister Cecilia who is a tour guide for Rick Steves's touring company.  The wine tour is a lot of fun.  Do it if you can. (We met some lovely American people from Seattle and Denver on our tour.  Really nice people.)

The Orvieto area has all the great charms of Italy - the history, the sights, the people, the food, the wine etc - but without the outrageous bustling crowds and higher costs of the more popular areas.  You have everything here that you need for a wonderfully relaxing holiday.  You're staying in a vineyard with superb wines on tap. There's great food and wine and great sights all around you. The accommodation is wonderfully quiet and tucked away.  It's very much a home away from home and ideal for couples or families.  The bedrooms and bathrooms are a good size and have everything you need.  The kitchen is nicely appointed. You can cook here every night if you wish. There's a Weber kettle BBQ cooker outside and a wonderful alfresco dining area that we used heavily during our stay.

This was an exceptional holiday. Corrado and Simonetta have created something very special here.  It was a privilege to stay here. We will definitely try and return one day and strongly recommend the experience to others.

Exquisite wine and lovely atmosphere
May 2017 • Friends
Alessandro was our host for our wine tasting. He took us into the cellar and then back to the main room for wine tasting and some delicious food. He explained what wines are best served with the different food. The wine was so delightfully amazing. The Lunato was my favorite. Would have loved to have bought cases of it to bring back to the United States! Highly recommended!

Staying at Tenuta Le Velette - Magical
Sep 2016 • Couples
I booked the Il Due apartment for my wife, me and my sister. The location was magical, walking out our door and looking at Orvieto on its tufa pedestal. Simonetta was a wonderful host, and the apartment was spotless, comfortable and very relaxing. We were there during the harvest of the grapes which greatly added to the ambiance of the estate. We were invited to join a Rick Steves group that was visiting for a "wine experience". Cecelia was a wonderful ambassador for her wines, the region and the importance of pairing wine and food. The tour was very informative and fun. We spent 17 days in Italy, and the 5 that we spent a Le Vedette in Il Due was the highlight of our trip. We will definitely be returning!!
