A very small fee to enter but it's worth it. The excavation that has been done is something to marvel at. There are plenty of pictures and signs in many languages to help you understand what you are looking at and how the area was used.

We took a day trip from Rome to Orvieto and it was absolutely awesome. Very quick and inexpensive train trip, directly to the funicular which took us to the town on the top of the hill. Easy walking city with plenty to do for an entire day. We did a walking tour, which was very well planned and took you... More

The caves give an interesting view of life of the ancient Orvietans going back some 3000 years. Perhaps even before the Etruscans. Here they kept the harvest, pressed the olives and kept fresh food (pigeons). Cool in summer and winter alike. These storage caves were dug out of the soft upper rock from under every house. Accessible when needed. And... More

We really enjoyed learning about the history of the caves and enjoyed getting out of the hot August sun for a little while. It was interesting to see how creatively the ancient residents built and used the caves. Entire businesses were run within the caves. Our tour only covered a small portion of the large network beneath the town, but... More

Just fascinating. A well directed tour, certainly a "must see" if you are visiting Orvieto. And if you happen to be in Orvieto when it's hot out, you will definitely welcome the cool, underground temperatures. An amazing history and architecture lesson. Don't miss this. Tickets for the guided tour can be purchased near the Duomo.

The cave underneath the city of Orvieto tell a fascinating story going back to the time of the Etruscans. Certainly worth a visit.

i did this tour with my boyfriend, but my dad and stepmother/brothers did it was well a different day. We all concluded that it is a MUST SEE for those visiting Orvieto! The only thing I will say is that if you are extremely claustrophobic you may want to skip it... there is a part with a very tight climb... More
