Second World War Ortana
Aug 2021
I had an excellent trip to Ortana and found the Canadian experience in the town in December 1943 moving and much appreciated by the citizens through their recording of events and the connections with Canada that continued for many years after the war. The CWGC had just had a close call with the coastal forest fires but I am delighted to say had escaped almost unscathed. As always they are a wonderful way of honouring the young people who died nearby during very different times.

Peaceful Resting Place
Oct 2019
This cemetery is beautifully maintained by the Canadian government. The headstones have the soldier's name, regiment, age, cross or Star of David, and a poem or special thought from a loved one. Flowering plants were planted between the headstones. This is truly a peaceful resting place.

A very memorable stop
Sep 2019
We stopped to look up the grave of my dad’s first Cousin who was killed in the Battle of Ortona on Dec 20, 1943. I remembered him stopping off at our farm before he left for Europe. It was a very peaceful place, so well maintained, with a shelter containing a record of everyone buried there and a guest book for every visitor to sign. So many young Canadians gave their lives for us. Didn’t come up on our GPS but we were able to locate it with the help of locals.

Serene resting place
Jul 2019
Beautifully maintained, this cemetery is a touching place to reflect on the sacrifice of those buried here (of the 1,615 graves 1,375 are Canadian) and that lost their lives fighting for a better world at Moro River and Ortona during World War II in late 1943.
The place is permanently open and may be visited anytime.
A must visit if you are in the area.

Homage to the fallen
May 2019
Immaculately maintained and extraordinarily peaceful ground for those who gave their all for us. Went with the father-in-law who’s father fought there and survived, paying homage to his dad’s young friends who made the ultimate sacrifice.

A beautiful resting place
Jun 2018 • Couples
We went there to visit the grave of an uncle who had died in the Battle of Ortona. It is beautifully kept, with manicured green lawns and gorgeous flowers, which were in bloom when we were there. The smell of the mock orange was heavenly. My grandparents are long dead, but I feel certain they would be happy knowing their son was there.

Definitely a place of remembrance
May 2018 • Couples
Visited Ortona during a cruise around Italy and made a special trip to the Canadian War Cemetery just outside of town. It was a very moving experience; the rows on rows of well maintained white headstones listing the young men from all across Canada who died while fighting in Italy, The Battle of Ortona was a significant effort for the Canadian Armed Forces in WWII and this cemetery shows how much this took from Canada. For those who have a definite interest in the war, the losses shown here reflect how widespread the impact on Canada was.

The impact visiting this site is mind blowing. The sacrifice that was made in this battle needs to be remembered. We walked the battle route and then physically understood what these soldiers must have experienced.

Very well-kept with lovely flowers. Important place to remember huge Canadian losses in 1943-1944. Well worth the visit.

Sombering but worth seeing
Oct 2017 • Couples
If you visit the Museo Battaglia de Ortona honoring Canadian soldiers participating and/or killed in this battle, you should follow it up with a visit to this cemetery. As with all military cemeteries around the world, this final resting place is well kept and inviting. As Canadians, we were touched seeing the tombstones of such young men killed in action protecting our freedoms and liberties.
