Beautiful
Oct 2019
This cathedral is famous for having the Relics of St Thomas the Apostle. We entered through the west portal, a beautiful door surrounded by ornate stone architecture. The inside was a little dark probably due to a cloudy day. We had limited time so did not see the crypt.

Splendid church
Jul 2019
This church is located in the center of this lovely coastal town and is famous for holding the remains of Saint-Thomas the Apostle.
Many times reconstructed, it dates back to 1258. The main Portal is the original one from 1311 and its white stone contrasts with the rest of the structure built in red bricks.
The interior features one nave and lateral chapels and a crypt below the altar with the remains of Saint-Thomas. When I visited there was no other person in it and I was able to admire it in absolute silence.

Spiritual experience augmented by the relic.
Jun 2019 • Family
The church itself was beautiful but comparable to other churches in italy. The part that blew you away was the relic. The spiritual power of Saint Thomas could be felt in your bones- a
truly awe inspiring experience.

Lovely church in a wonderful town
May 2019 • Friends
After strolling around the town and taking in the harbor views, we stopped into the church as we were told it held the bones of St. Thomas. The church was extremely quiet and meditative, but clearly the main attraction was the crypt at the front of the church. It was very contemporary, which almost seemed out of place. There was also a small museum off the sanctuary that you could visit for a minimal fee.

Take a strol along the promenade and visit the Basilica
Mar 2018
Every town has it's church but Ortona has this beautiful Basilica. It's face is simple but the inside is marvelous. When visiting out of season you can take your time visiting Abruzzos beautiful locations in almost solitude embracing and absorbing its magnificence.

Ultimate destination
Jun 2018 • Family
My daughter and I walked the Cammino di San Tommaso leaving Vatican City June 6 and arriving in Ortona, at the Basilica di SanTommaso Apostolo in the afternoon of June 20. The Basilica was our destination, especially the crypt devoted to the relics of Saint Thomas.
The crypt is simple and beautiful in its simplicity. The relics are displayed in an elegant manner. There is a memorial to Saint Brigida of Sweden who inspired the creation of the Cammino.
We also met the priest and, as a result of my daughter's conversation with him, we were presented with a beautiful testamonium which we will treasure.

An unexpected visit
Apr 2018 • Family
We visited Basilica Cattedrale di San Tommaso Apostolo whilst travelling back from Lanciano and trying to fill our days in Abruzzo. We were glad we visited as the Cupola is stunning with some beautifully ornate frescos which made for some lovely photos from an otherwise unremarkable day out in Abruzzo.

The home of St. Thomas the Apostle.
Jan 2017 • Family
This amazing church is the final resting place of St. Thomas the Apostle. But that's only have the story... The church itself was nearly completely destroyed during World War 2 and they did an amazing job restoring it but keeping original parts.

When you go inside and view St. Thomas you can feel his presence. It is an awe inspiring experience.

Tomb of Saint Thomas
Dec 2016 • Solo
I drove a rental car from Rome to this basilica in Ortona and then continued driving south along the coast to Taranto. I believe the drive from Rome to Ortona was only about 2 hours or so. When I arrived I needed to wait until 1pm for the basilica to open. I believe it is opened in the morning then closes and opens again at 1pm. While waiting about an hour I walked around the town and took some photos. I was there December 26 which I believe is a holiday in Italy, St Stephen's day, so most of the shops and restaurants were closed around town. There is a sign out front written in both English and Italian providing information about the basilica and Thomas. There are also signs inside in English as well. The tomb of Saint Thomas is located downstairs directly beneath the main altar. There is not a fee, though there are donation boxes, and photos/videos are allowed. I visited all of the tombs of the apostles in Italy during my 2 week stay so this was a must see for me. The architecture and artwork inside is beautiful, well worth the visit.
